"Carmona, who holds a UA master’s degree in public health, made headlines
even before his appointment. Carmona rappelled out of a helicopter to execute
a cliff-side rescue of a MedEvac helicopter crash survivor. That event inspired
a made-for-TV movie. In 1999, he stopped at a traffic accident at
Campbell and Grant in Tucson. Carmona quickly realized it was a hostage situation
and a woman’s life was in danger. He shot and killed the armed suspect. According to
Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik, the dead man had just murdered his own
father and was apparently on his way to kill someone else."
