Best/Favorite BOOK that you didn't want to read
My is easy...MOBY DICK

Classic American Literature at WSU-didn't read it-discussed it-took the test-got a C. Two years later I picked it up over the summer, and loved it. Read it three times since and will again someday.

----Any similar stories/experience???

1. Pentagon papers
I always recommend it to insomniacs. But you come away with a
lot of respect for Eisenhower.

2. "Lord of the Flies"
Had to read it for an assignment in H.S. Lit class and was skeptical at first(I rebelled against almost everything in those days) and was awed after I read it. I read it again a few years later and then a while later. I may even read it again now. Fine book and the movie was good too.

3. Death on the ice
But it was good. It's about Newfie seal hunters that get stuck in the ice and many freeze to death.

4. The Scarlet Letter
Was forced to read it my junior year of high school. Thought it would be dry and dull but found it to be rich and insightful. I consider it to be one of the three indispensable American novels. The other two are Moby Dick and Huckleberry Finn.

5. Crime & Punishment
I did not want to read it. But the moment I started I was hooked. Excellent, excellent book.

On the other hand, I was really excited about reading Kafka's Metamorphosis. Turns out I hated that book.

8. The Grapes of Wrath
Only read it last year for a DU book club. Magnificent piece of literature. Currently reading "Catcher in the Rye" for the first time.

13. DU book club?
where is this exclusive club you speak of. I admire the itellect of nearly everyone on this board and would love the suggestions. Is there some sort of initiation ritual to join?
oh, and in my case it'd have to be Catch-22. Started it three times before I realized how brilliant it was. My favorite book to this day. And the Brothers Karamozov, at a roomies instigation. The inquisitor blew my shit.

15. It was in the Meeting Room forum
We did Grapes of Wrath, the Handmaids Tale, Confederacy of Dunces and Slaughterhouse Five. It just sort of died out as election news grew but I'm sure it could be easily revived...Doesn't have to be a new book if you can get people interested in re-reading it....I'd love to see it come back-we had some enjoyable discussions-especially on the "Handmaid's Tale" (I moderated that one!)

11. The Odyssey and the Iliad.
I hated having to read those books, yet they awakened a life long interest in me for ancient mediterranean history and archaelogy.
