1. All excellent musicians, and all put on hella good shows.
Waters doesn't put on a show as big as Floyd, but I saw him a few weeks ago (for the first time!) and it was fucking AWESOME!

I've seen Floyd sans Waters a number of times, and also AWESOME!

Speaking personally, I don't think it has to be an either/or proposition.

When I saw Floyd, I missed Waters' voice and bass playing, even though others fit the bill just fine.

When I saw Waters, I missed Gilmour's playing, even though the guitarists were doing his solos pretty much verbatim, and missed his voice.

My preference is to have them all together, and I pray to God that they will reunite for a tour that will last ten years. Or at least one tour, anyway, for a few months...

(in terms of solo stuff, I think Gilmour's stands up much better than Waters, who seems to do the same album every time - good, yes; but for God's sake, Waters, learn a new trick)

19. It's true--he was really the essence of it
For like six months. Like forty years ago.

I know that it's a matter of taste, but most Barrett stuff, to me, is indistinguishable from the pure cacophony you might get from the Thai Elephant Orchestra. Everything that distinguishes Floyd as Floyd came after his departure.

YMMV, of course.

22. Waters/Gilmour wrote many songs in memory of Syd.
I hardly think much of Pink Floyd's more popular material would have come out, had it not been for Syd.

28. well...
That's like saying that Johnny Cash wouldn't have covered Hurt if Trent's dog hadn't died. The statement is true, but once we get into who-inspired-what, we're kind of in an endless loop.

Much of Floyd's stuff was inspired by Waters' father, for that matter--let's make him an honorary Most Important Band-Member.

15. Pink Floyd since Roger Waters left has been a pale imitation of itself
Yes, we all listened to Learning To Fly and Dogs of War until we were sick of them, but let's face it - without the spark that is Roger Waters, it just isn't the same.

David Gilmour would have had better luck collaborating with Peter Gabriel or Kate Bush on a few projects instead of commercializing the Floyd sound. But that's just derby talking...

17. Agreed. The Waters/Gilmore tension is what made post-Syd Floyd work
Without both of them there, there's not a whole lot going on. Just a jukebox of "Pink Floyd's Greatest Hits".

23. Roger Waters IS Pink Floyd
David Gilmour is an incredible guitarist, and not too bad of a singer, but he's not a founding member, so he's got no right to claim the band name.

Not that I think there's going to be anymore psuedo-Floyd tours.

25. Syd Barrett. Who would they be without him?
Trivia: It was Syd Barret who came up with the name Pink Floyd. He combined the names of his two favorite blues singers: "Pink Anderson" and "Floyd Council" to create "The Pink Floyd Sound". That got shortened to "The Pink Floyd" and eventually just "Pink Floyd".

"You reached for the secret too young/Black, black holes in the sun/Shine on you crazy diamond".
from "Wish You Were Here" is directly related to Roger Waters's feelings about his mentally ailing friend. This poignant album was about the band, about Roger Waters and about Syd Barrett.
(Taken from: "the unauthorized 100 page full color picture book and audio documentary CD: "the pink floyd star profile" by John Lisners)

"Yippee!!!...they can't see me but I can you...."

26. Syd Barrett is more interesting than all of them. The rest are only interesting together
Roger gets extremely tiresome without creative musical backing, and Gilmour and co. are incapable of cohesive, adequate songwriting.

27. The sum is greater than its parts
The entity known as 'Pink Floyd' is really three different incarnations of the same body.

30. the whole is greater than the sum of their parts
my interest in the post-waters pink floyd is based, I'll confess, mostly on their name. But, then, my interest in the post-floyd waters is, well, not much at all, though his solo music certainly isn't bad ...

31. Gilmore's head is remarkably larger
Edited on Sun Jul-08-07 12:36 AM by underpants
but yet Water's head is very hatchet like

Could he wear more black?
From a distance and with more drugs he looks like Richard Gere but then I am no gerbil.

I liked I had never seen a performance but that was impressive but for the life of me I have no idea what the pig is about.

Plus Gilmore comes off as an ass. Waters is the reason we even know his name.

Their feuding seems petty from outside, but I don't doubt that it was due in part to genuine artistic differences. I'd just like to see them keep performing together.
