Hunky Dudes in Kilts with Very Large Poles (PIC HEAVY)
Went to the Scottish Games and Celtic Festival today and thought I'd share some of it.

•The best (IMHO) of several bagpipe bands. I believe this one was the Macintoshes, from
Larkspur, Calif.

•Traditional Scottish dancers.

•Non-traditional Scottish musicians. Great sound with the pipes, though.

•This dude had about eight kajillion different instruments. I dunno what this
one's called, but he'd crank the thing on the left and mess with the knobs
on the right, then play the keys. It sounded sorta like a theremin.

•A rather large Irish wolfhound. That's my BIL at right, talking to the dog's
slave.

•Trying to see for yourself, laddie?

•Hunky dude in a kilt, throwing the hammer. They were throwin' it like 80
feet.

•Another hunky dude in a kilt, about to toss
a caber.

•Same hunky dude in kilt, making a rather loud, guttural sound as
his caber goes a-flyin'.

•Yet another hunky dude in a kilt, about to try to throw a 42-pound
weight over a bar 14 1/2 feet high.

•Same hunky dude in kilt, making another rather loud, guttural sound
as his 42-pound weight soars skyward, but not quite 14 1/2 feet.

•A caber used in a record toss. I had to include it here as it's made of larch,
which allows me to sneak in a Monty Python reference. :7

7. Ah, thankew
How very Donovan-ish. :D

Nope, I didn't partake of the comestibles or libations. I wanted to buy a touring cap of Irish tweed, but they didn't have 'em big enough for my stupid, massive cranium. :(

3. Great pictures!
The instrument in question appears to be a hurdy gurdy:

Thanks for sharing! I would have liked to have heard the music. Where is this held?

10. This one was at Toro Park
off Highway 68 between Salinas and Monterey, Calif. We went today to see the competitive events (caber toss, etc.) but if we'd waited until tomorrow we could've seen all the bagpipe bands en masse.

4. Interesting! Thanks for the pics.
And the Monty Python reference :-)

The Caber tossers are why it's nuts for terrorists to attack Scotland. The Scots'd kick their asses!

6. #187 is nice yes sure but what about the softness of the one in the red?
BTW- I would really like to know about the entry level of this because I am pretty sturdy stock and I have no idea how I wouldn't do well in this type of event.

18. Great pics, but a strange story to follow:
Read all abaht it! Read all abaht it! Oeditpus Rex turns into Scotsman!

The eyewitness I spoke with, referred as Mr. Eyewitness for privacy (If you want to contact him, please call 415-945 32 78 and ask for Peter Podgorny, Valley Dr. 234, San Federico, CA, 94113.)

Call Me Wesley Mr. Eyewitness - you knew Oeditpus Rex quite well I believe?

Mr. Eyewitness Oh yes quite well.

Call Me Wesley Yes.

Mr. Eyewitness He was my BIL.

Call Me Wesley Yes. And, er, he never showed any inclination towards being a Scotsman before this happened?

Mr. Eyewitness No, no, not at all. He was not that sort of person ...

Call Me Wesley He didn't wear a kilt or play the bagpipes, the hurdy gurdy? Ate haggis with spam and eggs?

Mr. Eyewitness No, no.

Call Me Wesley He never got drunk at night or bought home black puddings?

Mr. Eyewitness No, no. Not at all. Puddings perhaps, but only on special occasions, if you get my drift.

Call Me Wesley He didn't have an inadequate brain capacity?

Mr. Eyewitness No, no, not at all. He lacked grammar quite a bit, but he always carried a dictionary with him, as well as his grammar nazi cap. It was blue.

Call Me Wesley I see. So by your account Oeditpus Rex was a perfectly ordinary Californian without any tendency towards being a Scotsman whatsoever?

Mr. Eyewitness Absolutely, yes. -- Mind you he did always watch Dr. Phil on television.

Call Me Wesley Ah-hah! ... Well that's it, you see. That's how it starts.

Mr. Eyewitness I beg your pardon?

Call Me Wesley Well you see Scottishness starts with little things like that, and works up. You see, people don't just turn into a Scotsman for no reason at all ... No further questions!
