4. Really, it wasn't much of a letter |

Some guy just wrote such a silly letter I felt compelled to tell him off, even though I doubt it'll be published. Some excerpts from his: "We didn't send our troops to a tea party. We sent them to war. People on both sides die in a war. We are fighting for freedom. War is hell and terrorists are evil" "You have the luxury of publishing your headlines (orig headline Six more soldiers killed. An increasingly war weary Canada asks: Is it time to bring troops home?). The NDP has the luxury of demanding the troops come home." "The media, politicians and Canadians in the second world war didn't ask the same question as your front page asks. They supported the troops and the troops stayed and fought the Nazis in Europe and we lost not 66 but but tens of thousands of Canadians for the cause of freedom. Where would we be today if Canadians back then said 'We lost 66 soldiers, lets bring our troops home. It's too dangerous fighting Hitler..'"
I just said:
Maurice Depiero's letter of 07/06 ("Canadians aren't quitters") bordered on ridiculous. Hyperbole like this only cheapens the dialog that is necessary in this situation. Trying to shame or insult people in to quieting their disagreement is going against everything we are reportedly fighting for. If we are in fact over there for freedom, his outrage against Canadians use of freedom to discuss and debate this issue is confusing. Comparing Afghanistan to WW2 and the Nazis is off putting, insulting, and so outlandish as to render his entire letter ridiculous. This ballyhoo is tired and offensive.
