1. wrap it up in a bandaid and let nature take its course... |
|
or let a medical professional take care of it for you, if you do yank it (I don't really recommend it) use a betadine solution to clean that sucker and keep it clean for several days after to avoid infection

Lost it skateboarding...long story.
Wrapped and taped it up for a few days, until the skin got tougher, then left it be for months until it grew back.

and I'd recommend/advise wrapping it while in shoes or socks, leave bare and dry when you can, and above all keep it clean.
(from this former dancer, who's undergone a lot of foot abuse.)

It will replace itself. Get some fungicidal cream and rub it on the skin (so long as there's no open wound!) daily to keep a fungi infection down, and it should be fine.

I slammed the car door shut on my big toe once. Lost the nail a few days later.
Just keep it bandaged during work or when you are out and clean it daily. Keep the bandage off at home :)
It'll grow back.

7. Hurts like hell, doesn't it! |

GO TO A DOCTOR. He has to make sure the entire nail is either off completely or is good enough to come back properly.
Toes are surprisingly valuable assets, and to not properly take care of it immediately assures a lot of future needless pain.

If there's a bruise under the nail the doc can burn a tiny hole in the nail and it will relieve the pressure and pain. Watch yer toes and feel better soon!

Bad accident with a door.
Me? I went to the Er. That's how I deal with thing like that. Last thing I want is a weird infection that eats my fingers.
You might just want to visit the Dr.

13. I have one toenail that has come off repeatedly for the last 2 years. |
|
It started as a grappling/wrestling injury. (I had a fracture and the skin was really torn up!)The nail will come off eventually, and there will probably be the beginnings of a new nail forming where the old nail used to be. You should probably keep it wrapped up for now.

It may fall off and grow back if it is badly hurt.
I dropped a weight on my toe about 3 mos ago and it left a big black thing on my toenail that is finally about to grow off (too graphic )

Sorry, I had to do that one liner before I could offer sympathy...
I slammed a thumb in the car door many years ago--had to UNLOCK the door to get my hand free. I went to the doctor with it and they drilled a hole in the nail to reduce pressure. Drilling that hole hurt almost as bad as getting hurt did in the first place but the blood just flew out once they got the hole made. It was like a Peckinpah movie.
Funny thing about that, I went home and it started to hurt a lot. I thought my thumb was gonna fall off--and I was hoping it would because it hurt so durn bad. I had some pain pills that I had been given for migraine relief, and I got up and took a double dose of those. The last thing I remember was sitting on the sofa petting the cat with one hand and the hurt one laying on a pillow.
I woke up many hours later with blood on the sofa, blood on the pillows and blood on the cat. That thing had burst open while I was passed out and (apparently) spewed everywhere. I felt much better, but the cat was not too happy when I had to wash the blood off her.
Anyhow, that nail did finally fall off, and a new one was growing up from the bottom underneath it. If it grows back it grows out from the base of the nail.
Hope you feel better soon, and DON'T bleed on the cat!
Laura
