Furniture is FRICKEN expensive...
Edited on Sun Jul-08-07 07:13 PM by jasonc
Why does a bed have to cost 1200 dollars and a dresser 900 dollars?

http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p8061/index.cfm?pkey=ff081

WTF?

edit, thats not even counting the mattress and bedding...

In fact, they're doing a clearance at all their Mpls/St Paul locations. This would be a good time to check it, IMHO.

Also, Slumberland isn't too bad. I got a futon frame and a regular bed there for about $600 last December.

19. Go shopping at local furniture stores!
I was having some work done on my car, so I had a few hours to wander around downtown Easton, PA - home of a few good, local furniture stores. I found the perfect bed and after talking to one of the (very handsome) salespeople there, found out that the queen-sized bed was only $699+tax, no delivery fee.

Most of our furniture is over 100 years old or custom built...quite expensive, but I'll never buy another bed, dresser, table, etc. for the remainder of my life. If I went cheap, I'd be replacing it every few years and it wouldn't look as good.

27. honestly, places like Pottery Barn and Crate and Barrel and even
the Sundance Catalogue target yuppies with more cash than brains. I understand not wanting to buy used upholstered furniture - I have a phobia about bedbugs, mold, etc. - but if you are willing to look around at a few antique places you might find some beautiful pieces to supplement your newer purchases... if you are willing to mix and match styles a bit, you can come up with a unique, eclectic interior. And really, buying antique or secondhand is also much more environmentally responsible. If you DO feel the need to buy entirely new, try to see if you can purchase forest-friendly pieces. To get an idea of retailers, pick up an issue of Natural Home magazine - lots of furniture ads in there that are made of sustainably grown/harvested woods (though these tend to be $$$ as well -- but if you're willing to spend money, at least do it in an environmentally friendly way).

Good luck. I used to love the PB catalog, would visit Crate and Barrel, etc., then I just got pissed off. Even when I could afford it the prices made me mad.

I like golden oak bedroom furniture and found a nice wash stand I use as a nitestand and a very nice matching chest of drawers. I probably spent 500.00. Recently, I also found a dresser.

If I can find a queen sized headboard, I will be happy.

32. It's a racket
I used to work in a furniture warehouse in college, and learned that most of it is marked up 700% or more.

And I learned about globalization firsthand (this was the mid-80's), when I saw how much was made in Brazil and elsewhere, I realized why the owner of the store had mansions in several states and two countries, was rabidly anti-union, and paid us shit for wages.

I wised up soon enough.

33. Buy old, solid stuff. Don't waste it on new stuff except mattresses.
Go to a thrift store, salvation army, used furniture store. The new stuff is particle board with veneer on it, and it's not worth it. Put a new mattress on it.

Get a solid old sofa or chair and get it reupholstered.

I got a burnt orange sofa reupholstered with $36/yard fabric, which is fairly substantial for upholstery material, but not outrageous. It's five feet wide, too.

This sofa is slightly over eight feet long and plain. But the frame was good.

I got it redone with new fresh foam cushions, covers, zippers, guts, etc. The material cost more than the labor, and they redid a Lane formerly leather recliner with my material.

So I got two items redone completely for less than the cost of the material.

I will concede that it is MUCH harder to find reasonably priced furniture these days than it was 10 or 15 years ago. Even used stuff can be pricey now.

I remember in 1992 I bought a used full length sofa in good condition for 100 bucks. A couple of years ago, there was NOTHING for less than 200, and that was nasty crap.

Some people have mentioned IKEA, yeah, they're not too bad...

62. Stickley makes some fantastic stuff
Cheap particleboard veneered furniture won't last. Furniture that is built to be knock down, especially case goods won't last. The joints just don't hold up over time.

If you have a style that you really like find some good stuff in that style and keep it forever. Or better yet find a local craftsman and have something built.

64. Yes, buy high quality
whatever you can afford. It will last longer.

That's why auctions are useful. If you love antiques, solid wood antique furniture almost always goes begging at the auctions because of this rule:

The bigger the itme = the less you will pay vs it's real value.

Meaning, lots of really expensive but large stuff like bedroom and dining furniture goes for cheap because most people don't have the means to cart it away from the auction house.

70. My fav AR refinishing story
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 12:48 PM by supernova
A woman inherited a chest of drawers that she liked very much, good wood, very stylish, in good condition.... but "it was so dark and the finish was all dirty."

Lee and Lesley Keno told her it was an original Colonial (pre Revolution) Rhode Island Highboy that in ORIGINAL CONDITION would have been worth about $100,000.00.

Since she refinished it, it was worth only about 30-40,000.

Boy was she pissed. :D

71. similar
There was a pompous as hell guy on an east coast version who kept interrupting the person trying telling him about his piece... Pompous guy..."there was this reddish stain on it and it looked awful so we stripped it down and refinished it"

Well the good news is it is worth 60,000$ if you hadn't refinished it it would be worth 260,000-300,000$ at auction then proceeds to tell him where it was from and who most likely owned it etc etc.
The pompous guy didn't say a word and the person doing the estimate had a shit eating grin on their face when the camera cut away.

Loved it!

63. I built this for under $30 dollars
My wife really liked this shelf from Pottery Barn and there was NO way we were going to spend $249 on it. I went to Lowes and bought some 1 X's and paint. Using only a table saw and jig saw...I made an exact replica:

75. I want those too
for my new office.

I like the fact that they are open and not so heavy looking as traditional bookshelves.

66. A freebie
I have a floor lamp that I inherited from a former tenant of a flat I moved into. It's held together with duct tape. Eventually, I went looking for another. They're so dear, I've kept it instead. I've got my reading light and room light. That works for me. Who cares if it looks like Faluja.

69. learn to dicker
if you buy more than 1 or 2 pieces, you should be able to get a discount. repeat after me- 'if i buy all 5, can you give me a better price? i really like them, but that is more than i plan to spend."
if you don't get a better price, leave. come back the next day.
