Find out how common your name is

I happened across this neat part of the U.S. Census website that gives a list by frequency of last names found in the 1990 census. The most frequent is (not too surprisingly) Smith, followed by Johnson, Williams, Jones and Brown. The last name on the list, number 88799, is AAlderink. Check out where your family's names fall. There are also lists for male and female first names.

6. My first name is quite common

but my last name is WAAAY down the list. So far down, in fact, that I hunted up another website that made it easier to find. Here:

my last name (including differently spelled variations of it) isn't in the census database.

16. It's a sample file, not a universe listing and fairly unusual surnames may not appear

and those low frequency names that do may be no more or less frequent than those surnames that don't appear at all. (I'm paraphrasing the methodology report, but that's the gist.)

So the "Screwflys" weren't part of the search area sample used for estimation.

My SO's surname and its variants are all absent from the list too.
