What's your favorite musical?
Mine's The Last 5 Years by Jason Robert Brown.

Note: Operas like Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera do count

Note 2: If you dont know the difference, an opera is only singing, a musical has some normal dialouge

1. The Phantom of the Opera isn't an opera
There is dialogue throughout it.

5. I have the libretto sitting right next to me
I assure you there is dialogue throughout. It is a musical, not an opera.

50. Not that I want to be confused for a guy who knows stuff about operas.
But there are plenty of operas out there with spoken dialogue. Singspiels, the Magic Flute for instance, have spoken dialogue between the music.

I grew up on that, and the Music Man. Their broadway soundtrack albums were my first records.

Shoot, I forgot South Pacific.

43. I'll second that nomination
I don't even like musicals and I love Guys and Dolls.

I'd suggest the 1992 revival cast recording with Faith Prince and Nathan Lane on RCA Victor. It's a great recording with good balance between the orchestra and singers. And the orchestra is fantastic. Whoever the lead trumpet player is has chops to burn.

Now I have, I've Never Been in Love Before and Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat going through my head. Oh well, there are worse earworms to have.

10. Can I vote none of the above?
I particularly loathe the usual American-style musical, fantasy pieces in which people suddenly break out into song and choreographed dances.

That said, have you seen the new Irish movie "Once"? It's about a street musician and the girl he loves. It's filled with musical numbers, but only when they actually make sense in the script (e.g. when the guy is performing on the street corner). I can appreciate musicals like that.

51. Me, too.
I must have seen the movie six or seven times at the theater when it first came out and nearly played the grooves off my album. I was just coming up on 15 -- a story of forbidden young love really appealed to my romantic sensibilities. And I love the music.

I also like The King and I, Les Miserables, Guys and Dolls, Crazy for you, and Fiddler on the Roof. Any musical that is moving, not cheesy, and makes me wish that people would break out into song and dance in real life is a good musical.

Franklin then electrified him with his miraculous lightning rod, and together, the three of them, Franklin, Washington and the horse, conducted the entire revolution by themselves...'

44. Victor Victoria
No contest. It's my favorite movie, too.

But I also love "Music Man" and "Man of La Mancha" (saw that in the first run at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion with Jose Ferrar many years ago) and "Funny Face" -- Audrey's song/dance sequence called "On How To Be Lovely" blows me away every time I see it -- and then there are the operettas! "Showboat" and "Mikado" and so many more. My mother really did me a favor by taking me along to so many live musical performances, as I have not only all those memories but also all that music in my head.

Link to Audrey Hepburn's gloriously whimsical rendition of Gershwin and Gershwin's "On How To Be Lovely."
