Roger Waters is officially an ass |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 12:17 PM by matcom
listening to a local Rhode Island station. Waters is playing in Boston and they have been playing his set from Live Earth to promote the show.
according to the DJ, they received a letter from Water's legal team ordering them to stop. No part of his Live Earth performance may be replayed. Guess doing an appearance for an awareness cause isn't good enough for him.
does anyone know if the artists got paid for Live Earth? my guess would be no, and if I'm correct I guess if Waters doesn't get paid he doesn't allow anyone to play his stuff.

1. Could just be his lawyers... |
|
Negativland did an album that sampled a lot of U2's works and they were sued, despite U2 the band siding with Negativland and pleading to their own legal team to drop the charges.

and shows it at every concert must be a real asshole.
I knew from all the legal manipulations back in the 80s that Waters was a bit of an eccentric (borderline asshole) and very protective of his music. But I also know that he has very progressive when it comes to many of the issues we support here

18. True - that explains most of us here at DU |
|
:hide:
We knew he was an ass during the breakup of Pink Floyd. Personally Jimmy Page can get like that too with his music.
But I'd still pay the bucks to see Roger Waters anytime he's in concert because I know the guy is a fricking genius when it comes to music

3. I'm sure there are lots of legal issues around the music done at Live Earth |
|
How can it be replayed and under what circumstances, and the payment/royalties for such, whether they go to the bands or to the fund-raising, and probably there are restrictions even on how the bands can use the recordings.
More than likely, the radio station isn't paying any sort of royalties on the music they're playing (since clearly none of it has been released for public broadcasting), but is generating ad revenue for themselves through the playing of it, and thus screwing both Roger Waters AND Live Earth.

17. Does Live Earth own the rights to the broadcasts? |
|
Seems like Waters might be protecting the Live Earth product, at his own expense, if I understand the OP. The station was using LE to promote an upcoming Roger Waters show, and Waters stopped them. Did I read that wrong? If not, Waters is protecting the LE product at the expense of free promotion of his own show.

Why would I bother going to MSNBC's site to view the videos if I can find them on YouTube. And I'm sure there are financial benefits to both MSNBC & Live Earth to have people hitting their websites to watch the concert.

|
http://breakingnews.iol.ie/entertainment/story.asp?j=224697914&p=zz46986zxThe purpose of the concert was to make others aware of better options when it comes to saving our planet earth. It's a shame that Madonna has some issues with the environment but it also sounds like she wants to change the way she does things. And knowing Madonna she'll go off the deep end with becoming environmentally friendly

8. It takes an asshole to know one |
|
First - all the Roger Waters concert stuff is found on the MSN/Live Earth page, heck I am watching it right now as we speak.
If anyone are the assholes it's the DJs in Boston who, from what it sounds like, are using illegal clips from the concert. All the concert video is available on Live Earth's website - anything else, like some of the stuff I've seen on You Tube, look to be homemade copies uploaded. Clearly to listen/view the material on other sites takes away revenue that Live Earth probably gets for all the hits to their website.
Waters has every right to ask the station to order them to stop playing the music - in fact all the musicians have that right. If you want to see/hear what Waters did at Live Earth go to their website and watch it there. I'm sure it'll also be a part of the Live Earth DVD to come out later this year.

16. The story even said that the RI DJ was playing the Live Earth set |
|
and from what I read, as just part of the morning show and nothing to do with the actual Live Earth event. Waters has every right to ask them to cease doing this.
The Live Earth package was no different than Live8 - the concerts are available thru online streaming with their partner company (Live8 was AOL, Live Earth has theirs thru MSNBC). The TV package was part of the deal (it was only NBC owned stations that had any broadcast, which Bravo is a part of that group - we watched it latenight on CNBC). And in a few months it will be included with the DVD.
We all know the history of protecting music rights. Waters donated his time and the songs he played for the purpose of raising both awareness and moneys for the Live Earth cause. To him, anything from that concert being played in a 'non-Live Earth' medium (IE - Rhode Island radio show) gives Waters every right to ask them to stop doing that.
And come on - we knew Waters was an asshole - he's really the reason why Pink Floyd broke up all those years ago. But he's still a musical genius who I was quite happy dishing out $150 for 10th row seats to see him in concert
