3. Just the home run derby tonight...
which isn't really baseball.

But the boys both have games, so that's something. Gotta look at the bright side?

8. Home run derby = BP
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 02:36 PM by Oeditpus Rex
And the only good thing about BP is being at the ball yard and shagging homers.

I have no desire to watch a buncha guys unload their 'roid rage on innocent, unsuspecting baseballs.

Y'know what I'd rather watch? A bunt derby. Lemme see some guys dump a ball so it rolls precisely 40 feet from home plate and stops dead, or drag one that perfectly eludes the catcher, pitcher and first baseman. Then I'll be impressed.

And how about a hit-and-run derby, too?

10. I haven't heard who's starting for the NL
Figure it's gotta be Penny or Peavy.

Kinda sucks that both got jacked up in their last starts, though. All-Star jinx, maybe.

I am TiVo-ing it though.

I was going to play hooky and go to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats-Portland Sea Dogs game this afternoon, but my stomach had other ideas.

13. Oooo, yeah!
Unfortunately, I gotta go like 40 miles to catch a minor league game.

Love that yard, though. A long time ago, they started the "baseball and barbecue" thing beyond the left-field seats. Good barbecue, too. :9

15. As a Dodger fan, you'll appreciate this
The Nashua Pride have a strong Dodger influence. Their uniforms are based on the Dodgers (royal blue, red numbers on the front), and the team's ballpark is located between Roy Campanella Dr. and Don Newcombe Dr.

In the forties, Nashua was the home to the Nashua Dodgers, a Brooklyn farm club. They had a nice rivalry with the Manchester Giants. Newcombe and Campanella were among the future Bums who passed through NH on the way to the show.

17. OMD, and Buzzie Bavasi was their GM!
IN 1946...Branch Rickey desegregated the Dodgers by sending Jackie Robinson to Montreal AAA. Five months later, he opened a second phase by signing catcher Roy Campanella and pitcher Don Newcombe. He had to send them to A ball because of their history as Negro League stars, but 3 of the 5 Dodger A teams were in segregated states. That left Danville, IL and Nashua, NH. Danville refused the 2 players, but Nashua GM Buzzie Bavasi said If they can play ball better than what we have, we dont care what color they are.

And this, from Wikipedia:

Although Bavasi did not know for certain, he suspected that (Dodgers president Branch) Rickey, who had started to integrate the Dodgers' farm system with the signing of Jackie Robinson the previous October, might be planning to sign more African Americans to contracts. If that was the case, the Dodgers needed a low-level minor-league team outside the American South to which to assign these players. Ultimately, Bavasi chose Nashua, New Hampshire. With fewer than 35,000 people, Nashua would be the smallest market in the New England League, and fewer than fifty African Americans resided in the community. However, the Nashua Dodgers were assured of a predominantly French Canadian fan base, a fact which both Rickey and Bavasi believed would help in the integration of African Americans into minor league baseball. Additionally, Nashua was home to the relatively new Holman Stadium, which Bavasi was able to lease from the city.

I knew Bavasi built a lotta winners as Dodgers GM, but I didn't know he went that far back with 'em.

16. I ain't about memorizin' stats anymore
Was when I was a kid; at any given time I could tell you the numbers for all the Dodgers and the league leaders. Now, I rarely even look at stats tables.

Although being a sports statistician is right up there with my ideal jobs. Crunchin' 'em's a lot more fun than readin' 'em. :D
