Well, in 9 hours...
I will be getting one molar drilled down to a post to have a crown made, and I also will be getting a cavity filled.

My dentist is good...he gives me headphones and lets me play my own CD's while in the chair.

He also gives me a little gas cocktail. Not enough to put you to sleep, but enough for a nice buzz.

I asked him once to turn up the gas...he said...I won't turn it up any further, but I will tell you how to breathe to get a better buzz, so he did.

The last time I was there, I had the phones on, buzzing from the gas pretty good...he lifts the phones of my ear and says.."philboy, you need to move your tongue to the right"

I said...."OH SURE....ONCE AGAIN, IT'S ALL ABOUT YOUR PLEASURE! I HAVE NEEDS TOO YOU KNOW!"

9. I hate the sound of the drill.
And the smell, if it's drilling out an old metal filling.

24. LIW...
the sounds and burning smells can get to you, but if you get the gas...you don't care...ask for it...it will help.

I have 2 caps on the front, and I think 3 molar crowns...I don't mind needles, I don't mind drills...but the cost! yikes!

 I have been going to him for years...he is a really good fella. I'm sticking with him because he left a family party once to take care of my tooth that I knocked out at a Grateful Dead show in 1987. He's a caring guy.

6. I've just started a whole process of dental things that need to be done
First, a root canal later this week. I'm completely phobic, and it's taking all the courage I can muster.

So, I'll ask about that "breathing better to get a buzz" thing. Thanks!!

14. The worst part of my root canal was when the Dentist showed me the 10 needles she would use
to kill the root.

The root canal was painless.

25. I think it is the name that scares people.
My Dentist explained everything that she would do, that took away the fear.

The only bad part was having to listen to the guy next door scream when his tooth was pulled.

feeling pain while his tooth was being pulled? Did they not numb him up enough I wonder?

28. If it was a difficult tooth to pull - maybe fragile and prone to breakage - it can be very hard
on the bone and surrounding tissue, with lots of unpleasant pressure even if nearby nerves have been numbed.

30. Yes...
that makes sense...I have only ever had one pulled, and while he had to just about stand me on my head to get it out....I can't say that I felt it.

29. I had a different Dentist.
I didn't feel my mouth for hours afterward.

Maybe he was one of those tough guys who thought he didn't need to be numbed.

I can still hear that scream.

Tough guys that don't think they need to be numb change their tune when they get a tooth pulled right? LOL...God...I can't imagine much hurting more than that. Yikes!

32. Way back when I was teenager I had a tooth worked on where the Dentist hit the nerve with
the needle, no amount of numbing helped after that.

That was one long 30 minutes.

27. I agree, root canals are no big deal.
The crown prep is more time-consuming and uncomfortable. It's not my favorite time in the dentist's chair.

33. Well, I'm phobic because of a bad experience with an
orthodontist when I was in high school. Dentists have scared me shitless ever since.

I just read an article about oral sedation dentistry, and it really sounds like it would help me. The dentist I've been seeing doesn't do it, but another one in my PPO (I hate managed care--but if we didn't manage it, that damn care would be completely out of control!) near here lists "oral sedation" as one of his services in his yellow pages ad. I'm thinking of switching.

15. I had one root canal...
and here's the secret...

They actually pump novocaine down in there while they are drilling...so if it starts to hurt...grab his hand...and say...YOU'RE FUCKING HURTING ME!!!...they will not hurt you again...seriously...it's no big deal. Good luck.

7. hey...I did the same a while back.
Gas. The classic rock station in headphones. Heavy breathing whenever dentist left room.

I was convinced that Spill The Wine was the greatest song ever recorded that day. There was some secret message in it or something...

18. I had 4 root canals in one day, and one time had all top teeth cut out
It wasn't too bad. Doc told me not to smoke after all my teeth were out and not to drink.

I wasn't home 1/2 hour and I was smoking and chugging a beer.

I wanted to have sex too, but the wife felt I had done enough and did not want to see me Gum
