1. Wait for the infection to develop... It's easier to treat if you have larger samples of the pathogen |

3. All joking aside, I'd suggest a trip to see your Doc. |
|
Even IF your Tetanus shots are current (mine NEVER are!) a puncture wound that deep can present long term issues if you don't treat it correctly right now. Last summer I coached softball with a guy that somehow stepped on a nail during a GAME(?) He grossed out the kids big time because he was sitting in the dugout with his bloody sock and tennis shoe laying there on the bench while I played "medic."
He's a macho construction worker type and he REFUSED to go see a Doc. "Aw hell, Laura, it's bled enough to clean out the dirt!" was his logic at the time...
When we went to the winter concert at the school, several months later, he was on crutches. I walked up to talk to him and asked what was up with the crutches. He proceeds to tell me that he's had to have surgery on his foot because there was a bit of his SOCK stuck in that puncture wound and it abscessed! He missed a couple of weeks of work with that mess.
If it was me, I'd go to the Doc.

4. This is no place for serious advice! |
|
But thanks!
Curiously, just yesterday I happened to mention here in the Lounge a trip to the ER back in 1995 that resulted in my last tetanus shot. So it seemed like a good idea to drop by for another one last night.
One thing that hadn't occurred to me previously: a nail-through-the-foot can also act as an injection of whatever shit is on the bottom of your shoe, potentially resulting in a colorful array of infections beyond tetanus.
So my misstep earned me a jab in the arm and five days' worth of antibiotics. Whoops!

No worries, mate! Everybody KNOWS you can't catch the clap if you are taking antibiotics--so go have fun while ya can!
How was that for non-serious advice?
Laura
PS:
Ow! Sorry about the shots and the follow up drugs--but ya gotta know I am glad to hear you really did take it seriously. Lockjaw is just a horrible way to go...

We have to be certain no real medical advice is sought (or needed) to let these threads stay open. It looks clear from Orrex's reply that he's had the medical attention, so the thread can continue.

32. Well, that's a useful piece of advice. |
|
"A nail-through-the-foot can also act as an injection of whatever shit is on the bottom of your shoe, potentially resulting in a colorful array of infections beyond tetanus."
Or, for that matter, the inside of your shoe. In which case, given the state of my shoes, I'd be dead before I got to the doctor.

31. It's probably a good idea... |
|
to have had a tetanus shot within the last ten years.
They've changed the recipe or whatever you call it so you don't get a huge honkin' bruise at the injection site that leaves your entire arm sore as hell for three days.
Got one two months ago and didn't even sting.

I did that once, years ago--I stepped on an old nail that was in a board. I never saw it, and I wondered why my foot was starting to hurt. I looked down, and my white Ked sneaker was bright red. OUCH!
Get the tetanus shot. Just don't get an old fart German doctor to give it to you--it was about as bad as stepping on the nail.
