Is the GRE sample test in any way indicative of
the difficulty of the actual test? 'Cause it sure doesn't look too challenging.

1. I think it was fairly close to the actual test.
Which didn't strike me as crushingly difficult either. Don't get me wrong--I was glad I wasn't hung-over or anything, but it wasn't as bad as I had feared. Not by a long shot.

5. It's worth doing their online/electronic practice stuff
I bucked up and got the CD--that was VERY close to the actual test. I only put a week or two into prepping for it, but that was adequate. A longer time would've reduced the self-recriminations due to my procrastination though! :)

8. Yeah. It's an easy test
When I took it, I hadn't taken math in 15 years and I did fine.

9. Yep, it's pretty similar.
All I did to prep was do four or five of the sample tests, and came away with fairly high scores. You won't have any trouble at all with it.

12. the GRE isn't all that difficult in most ways...
...but it's petty wide ranging, IIRC, and there's the usual matter of limited time and test strategy to consider.

I took the GRE early during my junior year in college. I did well, and got in to all the grad schools I applied to. Still, during my second year of grad school I decided to retake it in order to improve my chances of receiving a fellowship I'd applied for. I'd had two additional years of advanced course work by that time and was preparing for my comprehensive exams-- arguably at the absolute peak of my academic prowess. I figured I could obliterate the GRE at that point.

Surprisingly, my score the second time was almost identical to my earlier score-- maybe 20 points higher on the aggregate, IIRC. I've always thought that was pretty interesting.

13. That is interesting
Thanks for your perspective. Yes, it does seem pretty wide-ranging, indeed. I'll definitely study up for it beforehand.

14. well if you do well, the test keeps getting harder, atleast that what happened when i took it.
if you score in the upper percentiles, the test will be far more difficult for you than for someone who scores in the middle percentiles.

18. well i dont know if this gre rule still holds, i took mine in 2003/4?
anyhow when you take the computerized gre, your first 5 questions determine whether you will score at a higher level or a lower level, so if you get the first five correct, they make the subsequent ones harder and harder. which is why its important to get the first 5 correct.

if you get them incorrect, they place you lower and lower. you can make up your score later, but its easier to do in the beginning.

my best advice to you, is to buy a princeton review text book and follow their advice, especially their test taking tips. (i got in the 95/98th percentiles, not cos i am brighter but because the test taking tips were stellar)
