1. We were only on the train for four hours... |
|
But we loved it. It was great. I would recommend having your own cabin, though, if you are traveling for longer than that. I have a friend who traveled cross country in coach and said it was miserable. Duckie

2. I met the most sexy and interesting man on an Amtrak trip! |
|
OML!! He was gorgeous, in a Brad Pitt sort of way. ;) Humma humma!! :P
He was a professor of English Literature, traveling back to Illinois, from a conference.
We shared a booth, he and his friend and fellow professor, for two days.
They looked out for my safety (I was really young at the time) and they sang songs
and told jokes and shared booze and cigs and stories and
I had the time of my life!! :)
They were just two of the nicest and funniest guys you'd ever want to share with a train trip!
Warm memories... ;)
Please don't ask about my Greyhound bus trips though!
That's a whole different ballpark! :P

3. I read all of Chalmers Johnson's "Blowback" on a trip from Denver to Chicago. |
|
I had planned to go all the way to DC on the ticket, but a mechanical failure in central California got the train to Denver at about 2:00 a.m. (eight hours late). I boarded, fell asleep immediately, and woke up in central Nebraska as the sun rose. As the day went on, it was clear we were going to miss our connection in Chicago, so I settled in with the book. We reached the outskirts of Chicago around 10:00 p.m., after remarkably sympathetic attention from a customer service rep who boarded in Omaha. Free dinner, all the information we could have hoped for about schedules and hotels, etc.
We were comped rooms at hotels in the Loop, along with more than enough money for two meals and cab fare. My schedule wouldn't allow me to stay in town until the next evening when my connecting train would leave Chicago, so I booked a flight for the next morning.
When I arrived in DC, I happened to catch a news update about a freight accident in Pennsylvania that, had I stayed to ride from Chicago to Washington, would have blocked my trip anyway and put me on a bus (and delayed me at least another day).
Despite the troubles, I read a great book, had no worries beyond meeting my schedule, and nothing but praise for the service and understanding on board.

5. I rode the Hiawatha from Milwaukee to Chicago |
|
almost every weekend for a year. That was when they had smoking cars.
I loved that trip. 80 minute with a good book, or a catnap, or flirting with other passengers.
:D
