8. See? If you woulda voted
Lo Duca might've started instead of Martin.

'Course, Martin would've come in in the first inning anyway, when Lo Duca got tossed.

4. That had me rollin' my eyes, too
First pitch was at 5:48.

The tribute to Mays, though — that had me riveted. I don't know of a ballplayer more loved, nor one I'd rather watch.

9. They could've shortened the Mays tribute, too
Drive that Caddy at 55 or so. :D

Pissed me off, though, that they stuck a jacket on him with "Say Hey" on the back. That is NOT his real nickname; some sportswriter or somebody made it up. His real nick is "Buck."

34. Buckduck was a nickname from his childhood, but Willie earned "The Say Hey Kid" tag
I remember watching TV commercials of Mays promoting a bakery where he would say, "Say Hey, eat Wonder Bread®, helps build strong bodies twelve ways". He also did a string of PSA spots where he said, "Say Hey kids, don't touch these, these are blasting caps". I knew of his nickname "Buck" from my childhood, but I also accept "Say Hey Kid" as a genuine nickname that was lovingly bestowed upon him, not something a sports writer hack conjured up.

35. I remember that PSA pretty clearly
Edited on Tue Jul-10-07 10:06 PM by Oeditpus Rex
"Those are blastin' caps. Remember, now, don't toush (sic) them. Tell a police or a fireman, wherever it is. Have fun, like I do — with those (cut to shot of bat and glove) and not with these."

They filmed it at Candlestick before a game. Some kid hollered "Willie!" and they left it in. :D

He was on the Donna Reed Show once, too. They were at a game, and Donna was trying to get his attention by calling, "Mr. Mays!" Finally, someone — Dr. Stone, maybe — whispered something to her and she called, "Say Hey!" and he turned around.

I also remember a billboard — think it was for Rainbo Bread — that had "Willie Mays Jr." on it and a picture of Mays' son, whose name is Michael. There is no Willie Mays Jr.

For that matter, Mays' plaque at Cooperstown has his name as Willie Howard Mays. His name is Willie Mays. No "Howard." And that's from the man himself.

Oh, and "Buckduck" came from "Duck-butt." His aunt, who raised him, said he was "high-bottomed." :D

36. William Howard Mays was Kitty-Kat, Willie's father
Willy Mays' Full name is exactly that: Willie Mays.

Did they really install a plaque at Cooperstown with the middle name Howard inserted? :wow:

I appreciate the "high-bottomed" Duck-butt trivia, amazing what one can learn at DU.

Reyes looked awestruck. Nice to see...but then Reyes is a true baseball player who loves the game and it's heros. He is so fun to watch.

in my life...Yeah the Yankees are not doing well this year. I am mad but my life will go on. :)

Plus, there is the whole second half left. They could turn it around. They have done that before after the break. Look at last year.

The "touché" is okay when the game's on, unless it's a curtain call. But not when you're being introduced.

I guess it hit a pebble or something but the ball shot in the opposite direction that A-Rod was positioned in. Not an error but it didn't look pretty
