Need your input on a email I intend on sending...
This friend of mine sent me some email about a ungrateful burqa wearing Iraqi immigrant :eyes: who was put in her place by a US soldier on leave. It's been floating around the web since 2003, total crap, even cited by snopes. Anyway, this person does not care that the story is a fake and went on a screed about immigrants, so I felt the need to respond. Please let me know what you think. Grammar cops, feel free to unload.

F' freepers.

Here goes...

Well, for me authenticity is important. To say that authenticity isn't important sounds like something Dick Cheney would say. In fact, I would dare state that the lack of authenticity is precisely why this nation is in the predicament that it is.

As for keeping our country free, our personal freedoms have never been so threatened as they have been for the past six years under this administration. So arrogant that they think that they can gallivant around the globe doing whatever they please for the benefit of a few, under the guise of "protecting" us, spreading "democracy" and "fighting terrorism." Mr. Bush & Mr. Cheney have abused the citizenry and have done such serious damage to our reputation as a nation, that I'm hardly surprised that others would talk negatively of us. Shouldn't you be upset with them?

These ungrateful immigrants you speak of, where are you meeting these people and what exactly are they saying? More importantly, who's hiring them? Interesting that nobody seems to discuss that.... cough-cough WAL-MART cough-cough Home Depot... The only thing negative I've ever heard from a foreigner is what your grandparents mentioned nearly a century ago, that we are "spoiled rotten". My Italian great-grandparents felt the same way and they even had the audacity to not learn how to speak English.

___________, I respect your opinion, I will always respect your opinion but I really think we have opposing views on this. I'm sorry but I am not buying into the Fox News, brown shirt, xenophobic/nationalist groove thing. It does not make me proud, it's racist scapegoating, it's "divide and conquer", it's embarrassing to us as a people and quite frankly, Un-American.

Respectfully yours,

2. My dear devilgrrl...
It looks good to me...

I think you're being very respectful...

Taking the high road is a good idea...

I doubt very much that it will do much to your friend's point of view, however...

Send it!

And good luck, sweetie...

4. Get in her face!!
Great letter, especially the line:

"More importantly, who's hiring them?"

I'd send the letter and then block them on my e-mail!

6. I would take out the boilerplate about 'respecting this person's opinion'
It sounds fake in light of the following sentence, and it doesn't seem that this person has respectable opinions in the first place...

10. It's stating my opinion of the situation...
which didn't do previously.

Besides, it's too late now. I sent it.

12. It's a good e-mail, it's nicer than what I probably would have written
I just think it sounds a bit odd to say that you "respect" an opinion, when in the next sentence you describe that opinion as xenophobic, racist, un-American, etc. I probably would have replaced the respect bit with something like "It's obvious we won't agree here, and I hope that doesn't interfere with our friendship, but..."

13. I was referring to the canned email as xenophobic...
not that person. That's I posted it, so hopefully, one of DU's genius wordsmith's would suggest a better way of say it. Too bad we were unable to discuss this before I sent it.

7. As a sort of an aside in writing emails, here is how I would start it:

It is about the hockey lockout, but see time: 4:23

I start many emails like this :)

14. You are more polite than I would be
When my FIL started sending me Zionist bullshit I told him to stop sending me his fucking shit and blocked him from my work address. My wife was a bit peeved at me but my BIL told him the same thing.
I would find it hard to respect someone with the opinions that you friend has.
