Whose song lyrics do you enjoy the most?

Who "does it" for you? Who reaches your soul and makes you feel they are speaking directly to you?

Neal has a great way with words, finding unusual meanings, rhymes and rhythms in the language that just work.

4. Tool's messages to fan boys accusing them of selling out
"Hooker with a penis"

I met a boy wearing vans, 501s, and a
Dope beastie t, nipple rings, and
New tattoos that claimed that he
Was ogt,
From 92,
The first ep.

And in between
Sips of coke
He told me that
He thought
We were sellin out,
Layin down,
Suckin up
To the man.

Well now Ive got some
A-dvice for you, little buddy.
Before you point the finger
You should know that
Im the man,

And if Im the man,
Then youre the man, and
Hes the man as well so you can
Point that fuckin finger up your ass.

All you know about me is what Ive sold you,
Dumb fuck.
I sold out long before you ever heard my name.

I sold my soul to make a record,
Dip shit,
And you bought one.

So Ive got some
Advice for you, little buddy.
Before you point your finger
You should know that
Im the man,
If Im the fuckin man
Then youre the fuckin man as well
So you can
Point that fuckin finger up your ass.

All you know about me is what Ive sold you,
Dumb fuck.
I sold out long before you ever heard my name.

I sold my soul to make a record,
Dip shit,
And you bought one.

All you read and
Wear or see and
Hear on tv
Is a product
Begging for your
Fatass dirty
Dollar

So...shut up and

Buy my new record
Send more money
Fuck you, buddy.

Nice, did you see them in concert on this last one? I saw them once at a packed house and it was sooooooooooo much fun and they looked like they were having fun, they were so good I had to go see them again.

What about the Foo Fighters? Always out there fighting the foo and making some pretty cool music along the way, not political though.

23. Most anything written by Jim Steinman... doesn't matter who sings it...
I see threads here and there where he gets bashed, but i have been in love wioth his work since i was 11 years old.

He is, perhaps, the one famous person that i would be reduced to *squeeing fangirl* status if i ever met him.

88. I love his work. It's over the top, and at times a bit flawed--
(meaning sometimes his lyrics are inconsistant and his music seems unfinished)--but he's all about following passions and throwing everything into life.

Except, he can't sing. :) "Bad for Good" had some good lyrics, but the vocals are horrific! Meatloaf was supposed to record the album, but canceled at the last minute, so Steinman sang the songs himself. I'll forgive him, though, after Pandora's Box.

57. Willy Vlautin of Richmond Fontaine
One of my true kindred souls in music:

http://www.richmondfontaine.com/

Willy's lyrics:

From the "Winnemucca" CD:

http://www.richmondfontaine.com/discography/lyrics/index.php?cd_id=1

From the "Lost Son" CD (my favorite record of theirs):

http://www.richmondfontaine.com/discography/lyrics/index.php?cd_id=4

From the "Miles From" CD:

http://www.richmondfontaine.com/discography/lyrics/index.php?cd_id=5

From the "Safety" CD:

http://www.richmondfontaine.com/discography/lyrics/index.php?cd_id=6

My all-time favorite lyric from Willy is probably "4 Hours Out"; not his best, but it speaks to me in many, many ways of my own life:

4 hours out, but I can't go back there
To A-Frames and quick build strip malls
And those panelled walls
Will become a distillery again under everyone's focus

13 cities, 7 years
Always uncertain, still unclear
It's a never ending haul of movement
Where nothing appeared right to me
It was barely in focus at all

4 hours out
Maybe my hair and blood will be against the
windshield
But I don't think I could get there either
And the people there will be the same
Knowing I couldn't make it alone
That I couldn't make it away
A-Frames will rise and the bricks will fall
But it'll be the same
Because I'm always the same

13 cities, 7 years
Always uncertain, still unclear
A never-ending haul of movement
Where nothing appeared except
13 cities, 7 years

I can't say I love him yet as I've only heard two of his songs ("Slow Down Gandhi," which is brilliant and which I've played about thirty million times, and "Escape Artist"). I don't usually like rap but his lyrics are intelligent and I can actually understand what he's saying.

'Makeshift Patriot' great slam of the Bush administration.
'Hoofprints in the Sand' another good political one
'Gunz, Yo' very funny
'Majority Rule'...the source of the quote in my sigline :D
'Broken Wings' sad and pretty
'Waterline' also kinda moving.
All of his stuff is great. Best rapper I ever heard.

Some pretty awesome stuff.

There used to be a program on the radio station I listen to, called The Warped Hours, on Friday nights. It's been cancelled but they played punk music and underground hip-hop and that's where I first heard Sage Francis. "Slow Down Gandhi" was the first of his songs that I heard.

75. I don't think he was second rate. I thought he had a certain amount of
genius in him.

When I was a teenager, I could have sworn he was reading my mind!

I almost started wearing a tinfoil hat!

83. Godsmack - Sick of Life
Paralyzed!
Nothing's getting through to me
Hypnotized!
From all my surroundings

I wanna be
Something I could never be
I wanna say
Things that I could never say

Yeah
I'm gonna do it again
I'm gonna do it again
I'm gonna do it again

Sick of my life
I'm tired of everything
In my life

Dragged down
Rubbing my face in the ground
No time
For the undecided

I wanna know
Why I've always felt alone
I wanna love
Why am I untouchable?

Yeah
I'm gonna do it again
I'm gonna do it again
I'm gonna do it again

Sick of my life
I'm tired of everything
In my life

I never wanted to be sick
Of my life
I'm tired of everything
In my life

Sick of my life
I'm tired of everything
In my life

I never wanted to be sick
Of my life
I'm tired of everything
In my life
yeah

91. Gretchen Peters--She's written for Bryan Adams, and a lot of country singers.
Here's my favorite by her is "Bus to Saint Cloud," sung by Trisha Yearwood and by Jimmy LaFave. Also, "Independence Day," by Martina McBride, "You don't even know who I am," by Patty Lovelace. Bryan Adams has recorded a lot of her songs. Beautiful lyrics.

Here's another recording of "Bus to Saint Cloud." Not nearly as haunting as Trisha Yearwood, but not too bad. Couldn't find a link to Trisha.

92. Al Stewart...
Year of the cat is probably one of the best songs ever written as far as construction and technique...

Also, I really love Road to Moscow and Time Passages...

On the Border...

Nostradamus...

All great songs...

93. Springsteen
I got a job working construction for the Johnstown company
But lately there ain't been much work on account of the economy
Now all them things that seemed so important
Well mister they vanished right into the air
Now I just act like I don't remember, Mary acts like she don't care

But I remember us riding in my brother's car
Her body tan and wet down at the reservoir
At night on them banks I'd lie awake
And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take

Now those memories come back to haunt me, they haunt me like a curse
Is a dream a lie if it don't come true
Or is it something worse
that sends me
Down to the river though I know the river is dry
Down to the river, my baby and I
