Strangest letter to an advice columnist I've ever seen
Where do these people come from? :banghead:

http://www.slate.com/id/2169932/nav/navoa/

Dear Prudie,

My daughter is 5 years old and has, like most girls her age, a hamper's worth of stuffed animals. While she has her favorites, she constantly wants more and usually connives to get someone (read: her grandparents) into procuring a new one every couple of weeks. The new one immediately becomes her favorite and she must sleep with it every night and haul it around half the day. My question is: Does this behavior indicate she'll be overly promiscuous as an adult, or at least unable to commit to a single partner?

1. Um. That guy is disturbed.
I can't begin to imagine why he'd obsess over a five year old's potential sex life. :eyes:

6. I know
The first time I read it, I was expecting some question about whether they should donate some of these things to charity or something.

Then I reached the end. :wow:

8. Exactly
He even points out that "like most little girls..." Does he think most little girls grow up to be promiscuous or "unable to commit to a single partner?"

Methinks he's got bigger problems than a 5 year old with too many stuffed animals. :scared:

9. Dear Perhaps Overly Worried Father,
You're just worried about the wrong member of your family. May I suggest immediate therapy? Your letter suggests your overly active imagination will likely get you into some real trouble in the future.

10. My guess is that the letter was written by some weisenheimer trying to yank the columnist's chain.
Or maybe he had a bet with his buddies over whether the letter would get published.

I don't believe for a second that it was written by a man truly concerned about his daughter's future sexual activities.

18. Yalies used to write fake letters to Ann Landers.
For entertainment. Then they got smart and mailed 'em from home, so they wouldn't have a New Haven postmark.

12. Prudie's reply is pretty good.
I believe she's in the LeftisWrite camp on this weisenheimer:

Dear Perhaps,
Of course that's what it indicates. You'd better start thinking now about what you're going to do when she's a young woman and throws over that big, chubby guy with the annoying laugh, Barney, for the sexually ambiguous Tinky-Winky, whom she then dumps for that moron, Elmo, who every time they come over asks you to get down on the floor and tickle him.

14. My dog does this.
Right down to the conniving to get her grandfather to take her to Petco for new toys. What's really confusing is that she's spayed. What could this mean?

God, there are morans in the world.

Not that I think that guy is going to get much out of it, but still. Long-term. Twice a week. Meds. Possibly a pharmacy.

Why teach her that the world won't cater to her whims when he can fret about her future sex life :eyes:?

Unless it was my birthday or Christmas my mom wouldn't let anybody give us stuff unless they ok'ed it with her first. Even for something as simple as a piece of gum they had to pull her aside and talk to her first before offering it to us. There was no conniving for new toys and night time tantrums.

21. What is the history of stuffed animals? Weren't there similar beliefs in the past,
as well as far less compassion for the average, non-domestic animal?

Didn't the Teddy Bear become popular not very long ago, relatively speaking?

I'm not saying that he has a legit question, or that he's not being creepy; I'm wondering if this sort of thing existed until recently. If you've read Alice Miller's books, you'll know that up until recently, the most f'd-up concepts about child-rearing were accepted and acted upon as gospel.

Weird.
