If I catch a bunny in my yard, will it bite me?
Or will it get "human stink" on it, and be rejected by it's mother?

It's SO cute, and it lets me get really close to it. I could totally grab it...

1. I'd worry about the 'human filth' factor too...
Not sure about that... But, if it's out and about it's Mom may have weaned them already.

2. It might. It would be very stressed at being handled.
The bunny would probably be happier if you didn't catch it. Don't know about the mama, but wild animals are best left undisturbed.

5. I knooow...
Damnit.
It owes me. It's eating my garden. But I really shouldn't touch it, probably.

6. Subdue it with the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch first!

From the Book of Armaments:

First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shalt be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thou foe, who being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.

8. Depends upon who throws it
And whether they've riled up the bunny prior to the toss.

9. The "human stink" thing is an old wives' tale
But, it may bite you, and bunnies can KICK.

13. I don't buy the "human stink" story.
I've rescued baby birds and other animals whose mothers seemed to have no problem with the human stink. Often when a baby is lying where a human can find and handle it, it is there because the mother has already rejected it, for whatever reason (illness, time to leave the nest, meth addiction causing the mother to stop caring, whatever). So, giving it back to mommie just causes mommie to abandon it again.

As for it biting you, I'd say that's a good bet, unless you coax it with food or somehow convince it you are a friend. It may already think of you that way, if this is the same bunnie from your other post (adorable little bugger that one was). It may have a relaxed comfort zone with you now, and still bite once you touch it. Can't say until you try.

Two thoughts, though, and neither happy. One, if the little thing is hanging around the yard in open view, it may be ill--rabbits usually don't like to be in the open like that. Two, if you get it too used to human proximity, it is more likely to get too close to the wrong human, or into a road, or something. So, unless you are planning to capture it and raise it in captivity, I'm not sure getting close to it is the best idea.

They are so darned cute, though! :)

Those are my thoughts, and they are just amateur, animal loving thoughts, not any professional advice. Personally, when I was a kid we had animals all around, and we captured and raised some of them from time to time, from bunnies to turtles to snakes. We always released them eventually, and none of them ever seemed the worse for wear. This was in a fairly rural area, though, so their chances of human encounter were lower than in a suburb.

16. Jack would lose his ever-loving mind if you caught it!
And, you'd be his super-mega double-dog hero for like, 20 or 30 minutes!

19. "Human stink" theory is bogus...
From my sister's website:

http://www.rescuedrabbits.org/911wr.html

Q. “I have picked up the babies – won’t my scent keep the mother away?”

A. No – the mother will not abandon her babies just because the scent of a human is on them. If you are doubtful, then wash your hands and rub them in the grass and soil around the nest and gently replace the babies, making the nest up as it was before you disturbed it.

With that said, wild buns are just that - wild. I have never had a wild rabbit bite me, even when rehabing them.

and then say, "Okay, take off the boots so I can nibble your toes."
