The more I see of the promos for the new "Hairspray" movie...
the less I want to see it.

The original was just near perfect.

And John Travolta isn't Divine, that's for sure.

13. You are definitely not the only one who can't figure out why a remake was done.

5. They're doing the same thing with this as they did with "The Producers"
Seems alot of holiday classic films are being made into musicals, which for most seems pretty neat. But the most successful ones (ie Producers & Hairspray) then get turned into NEW movies that are based on the Broadway Musical NOT the original movie

7. There will probably be a filmed version of "Young Frankenstein"...
the musical. Which, I'd like to see...even though I know tickets will be hideously expensive.

8. The film version of the "Producrers" musical was dreadful.
Considering the original film is classic Mel Brooks.

10. I have no clue how that movie could suck so badly
You had Lane & Broderick reviving their part and Will Ferrell was pretty damn good in the movie.

But all these movies from broadway musicals want to try and find a way to add a few more songs so they can put those new songs up for an Oscar. Any original broadway song in the movie can't be nominated because it was released previously.

3. I simply CRINGE at the thought...
of Travolta as Edna -- my god, Edna needs to be played by a big ol' OUT queen. What I have seen of Travolta in clips is hideous -- Edna appeares to have been de-trashified significantly, and his attempt at an accent is ridiculous.

I loved the original, I even liked the stage play with Harvey, but this...I just don't know if I can sit through it without gagging. :(

4. Hell Travolta isn't Harvey Fierstein either
I appreciate that this isn't a remake of John Waters original movie but of the Broadway musical but the least they could have done was put Harvey Fierstein in the roll that he garnered him another Tony Award.

I'd pay to see Fierstein do Hairspray, I'll wait for it to show up on Cable with Travolta

6. When I first heard they were going to do "Hairspray"...
I thought it was insane -- how could you possibly find someone to replace/recreate Divine as Edna???

And then they came up with Harvey -- probably the only one who could have done it. :) He was perfection!

John Travolta as Edna??? :puke:

9. Hollywood has run out of ideas
The only thing they can do is recycle or steal from other cultures now.

11. "Hollywood has run out of ideas" -- That's Not True
Hollywood has run out of ideas that will appeal to a mass audience which justifies the enormous expense of making the movie in the first place.

Back in the 70s, Hollywood cranked out classic after classic because they were making movies to appeal to a more sophisticated movie consumer. They left the mass appeal crap to TV.

12. Exactly. John Travolta is no Divine.
It appears to me that John Travolta has turned Edna Turnblad into a mugging, simpering idiot.

There is no way I want to see this trainwreck of a remake that should have been banned in the first place.

15. And that's what Travolta's Edna Turnblad looks like.
The casting in the original...Divine, Deborah Harry, Sonny Bono, Jerry Stiller, Ruth Brown...and Ricki Lake...just perfect. The original "Hairspray" is my favorite John Waters movie.

17. Same here
There is no way John Travolta can even compare to Divine.

I have no desire to see that movie. None.

18. I agree. Travolta and the girl that plays Tracy are unappealing.
Divine and Harvey played Edna Turnblad as brassy women. There was a great big dose of "fuck you, prudes" in their performances. Travolta is playing Edna as a timid Stepford marshmallow. His accent is terrible, too.

The girl playing Tracy is physically small and her voice is weak. Travolta towers over her. She also doesn't seem to have the right energy. Same with Queen Latifah, whose voice doesn't seem right for the role.

Everyone else seems great, though. I think some serious miscasts might ruin the film, but I'll read the reviews and give it a chance.
