Poll question: Am I an alchoholic?
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 03:01 PM by UndertheOcean
I am developing a habit on lonely weekends of buying the cheapest bottle of wine I could find ($5) , drinking it within 3 to 4 hours , then breaking into pleading for God to show himself to me while crying , or lament the human condition while listening to Freddy Mercury and other sad songs from british bands.

So am I an Alcoholic?

1. An occasional weekend, lonely or not, I don't think I'd worry...
...but since your praying to the "Porcelain God" on a Thursday afternoon, it seems to be a middle of the week thing as well.

The old adage is, if you are worried, you probably have something to worry about.

16. Yes, that's the key
Moving from weekends to everyday, and then getting to the point where that bottle of wine hardly gives you a buzz anymore so you have to move to two, or maybe harder stuff instead. And then you're having to up that also. And then you begin to only feel 'like yourself' when you have that buzz going.

So short answer, you're not there but you've moving in the right direction.

2. Well as long as it's just a weekend thing. But I think you need to work on your bargain hunting...
if $5 is the cheapest bottle of wine you can find. Hell, I can get a 4 liter bottle of Carlo Rossi for $8-$10. I'm sure that there is something from the lovely people at Thunderbird or Night Train that shouldn't be much more than $3 and possibly under $3 depending on how ritzy your store is.

7. Hmmm. I find it interesting that you think our undeclared friend is a man.
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 03:23 PM by JVS
The description made me think of a woman. Somehow in my intuition tells me otherwise, a man would continue drinking other things until unconscious or nauseated. Oh well.

And yeah, bumwine.com rules. Long ago they inspired me to try Cisco (aka liquid crack) Oh did that stuff do wonders. Maybe I'll get some this weekend.

13. I have met my fair share of men who drink and then get overtly poetic
or think they the prime minister of some country in their own mind.....and they will rant and rant until you force more liquor into them to put them out...

I have never tried Cisco...but I thought I had a skull fracture the day after riding the NightTrain in college...

Thunderbird...gag...they serve it straight from the freezer in order for you to be able to bear it's horrid taste.

it is a high alcohol content wine that used to sell for under $2 a bottle when I was in college...

I have a feeling heroin is probably healthier than Night Train

17. I'm actually a man.
not macho or of the chest thumping type , but rather effeminate I would say.

My problem is that all the ladies that I get a crush on prefer the tough manly persona.

Thats my luck.

I was and always have been a fan of the thoughtful nerdy types...

Mr. B is one...if you put him in a turtleneck and a tweed jacket he looks like a math professor...just my type...

Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 04:57 PM by supernova
I admit to sometimes drinking when I feel too shy to socialize, but the number of times I drink during the month, I could count on one hand. And at that, it's a two drink maximum.

30. try this one then
http://www.alcoholscreening.org/

It's not so much the drinking as it is the reason to drink. If you're doing it to avoid something else, it may be a problem. There are such things as "dry drunks", too, which are people who aren't actively drinking but still have a problem with alcohol.

There are also heavy/problem drinkers who are not truly alcoholics (i.e., addicted to alcohol), too. I was one of those. I had a problem with drinking too much, but did not fit the criteria to be an alcoholic. However, I do have bipolar disorder, and was more than likely using alcohol to self-medicate. Since I've been properly treating the bipolar disorder, I've lost the urge to drink and no longer crave alcohol.

34. That's better
it makes more of a distinction between drinking a lot and purposefully drinking to get loaded (like you say, to avoid something else), and simply enjoying a drink or two sometimes.

31. It's a "cult" trick
Not really knocking AA or the recovery industry. I think tests like these can make anyone who is having a "low self esteem" or "low confidence" day/week/life feel worse.

Do you sleep too much? Do you wake up tired? When you brush your teeth do you see the sleepy look in the mirror? Have you went to bed early or late this week? Try this wonderful pill! It's better than coffee and less damaging to your overworked body! For less than 19 cents a day you CAN BE BETTER! Send coin to BR549!

If you think you have a problem and you are losing sleep over it, than you may have a problem.

14. Do you have control over the behavior, or does the alcohol control you?
It's all about power. If you don't have control over it, you're an alcoholic.

24. You may be an alcoholic even if you have to ask the question-just not a good one.
Once you've awakened in a hotel room, in a pool of your own filth, naked except for a trench coat on, with no idea how you got there, then you won't have to ask.

28. You're an alcohol abuser...
Or binge drinker if you prefer.

Could turn into full blown alcoholism, or not. Depends. Very common in this country and these times.
I have done it. I try to find other ways of getting relief from stress and loneliness these days.
