20. My avatar is Bobby Sands....
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 06:34 PM by greatauntoftriplets
He was an Irishman who died in prison while on hunger strike in Northern Ireland while protesting the conditions of political prisoners being treated like criminals.

I strongly admire him.

On edit: The avatar is NOT -- as has been suggested at other forums -- a photo of myself. Aside from the fact that I never post photos of myself (a personal preference), I am female and blonde.

I was born and have lived in Northern Ireland all my life...so I do take a bit of an issue of people admiring terrorists who went around blowing up and killing people around where I live while growing up.

If I remember correctly he was part of a firebombing on a furniture store, some freedom fighting that was.

He was nothing other than a member in a group of murdering gangsters.

the first 2 years i was here i had this one----?

but after 2 years someone complained that it was "Offensive", it only offended certain people, everyone else got it and liked it.

so then i switched to this one here-------------? only i resized it and cropped Stuart's mom out of the pic because it was too large, so after a while a few posters were like "Who is that, he's really creepy" so then i just gave the f up and switched to Mastershake and so far no one has complained which is good because i ain't changing it.

33. Cover Art for "In the Court of the Crimson King"

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Court-Crimson-King/dp/B00065MDRW

The foundation of progressive rock, by King Crimson (Robert Fripp, Greg Lake and others). It depicts the first track - "21st Century Schizoid Man".

Blood rack barbed wire
Politician's funeral pyre
Innocents raped with napalm fire
Twenty first century schizoid man.

Death seed blind man's greed
Poets starving children bleed
Nothing he's got he really needs
Twenty first century schizoid man.

Seems fairly prophetic, for something written in the late 60s.

The artist, who was a computer programmer to pay the rent, died at the age of 24. This is probably his only significant well-known work. http://www.batguano.com/bgma/godber.html

75. Why did I select IMPEACH BUSH?
uh... nah no snark here...I am a human who has human feelings. My fellow humans in the Middle East have been through HELL because of the bush puppeteers need for Iraqi oil and more bombs. I fight alongside my fellow DUers on the need to remove the crooks from power. To me no other issue is as important in that no other issue can be addressed properly when attenuated through the bush administration.

If we want to best help our brothers and sisters in the Middle East, we must first remove those who continue to cause them the most harm, the very ones who would block our aid. I'll leave this avatar up until the day bush and co leave power. Then I'll likely replace it with...oh I don't know how about dick cheney dining on a plate of kittens or better yet Paris Hilton getting out of a car in a short dress or...well come to think of it, if bushco gets impeached I'll likely replace it with the popcorn smiley.

152. It literally ruined him, but it was genious.
I think in the search of perfection, he was quite worse than Chaplin. And he shot this one in 70mm and used a stereophonic sound, which most movie theaters couldn't show, so just a very few saw it. But he always played with the best technical formats available and refused to downsize it.

He built the whole set of this film and was hoping to sell it afterwards as apartments and offices but failed and it was demolished. Ironically, the place it once stood on on the suburb of Paris is now 'La Défense', a settlement of cold apartments and stores like he portrayed in his movie - merely a ghetto.

155. That's very sad. I didn't know that.
I haven't seen the movie in years but I remember a scene with him and a chair that had me in stitches and reminded me of Chaplin being crushed in the cogs of industrial machinery. Tati's take on the human animal's discomfort with modernity was more minimalist (ironically? apprpriately?) than Chaplin's and somehow darker and, I dare say, funnier.

151. Mine is Maj. Gen. Smedley Butler, USMC
He's discussed in my sig line. The most decorated hero of World War I and the man who foiled a plot by fascists to take down FDR's government. When I first started using it, there was little info on him available on the internet and now there's much more. I like to think I had some "viral" influence on that.
Butler's story is fascinating. In the 1930s, he was going around the Midwest making speeches against the corporate interests that were always fomenting war but the fascist conspirators who recruited him to be the figurehead of their coup weren't aware of how anti-war his views had become. His "War Is a Racket" is timeless, unfortunately.

156. I first learned about Gen. Butler by reading "The Corporation"
It's an excellent book and much better than the documentary made from it. It also clued me in on the worst Supreme Court decision in history: Santa Clara County v So. Pacific Railroad. The decision gave 14th-Amendment protections to coporations. That should also be studied in schools. It is the craziest decision the SC ever made and it was probably bought and paid for.
