Poll question: Should heated lounge debates on divisive issues move to GD?
I'm not referring to Lounge classics such as the Olive Garden, but politicized topics that seem to ruffle the feathers of some: i.e. public breastfeeding, circumcision, apparently now also parenting?

The lounge is a place to hang out and enjoy one another's company. I think if you have a thorn in your side about something, take it into GD. Otherwise let the lounge be a lounge - a place to chill out and have fun.

What do you think?

2. No matter what we're talking about, I prefer doing the talking here
with the people I consider "friends", rather than with the folks on GD. Maybe that isn't what the Lounge is technically *for*, but still--that's my selfish little personal preference. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that there are so many MORE people at GD, and quite a few of them tend to be rather...zealous. The "regulars" here at the Lounge seem to be less likely to go apeshit when someone challenges a cherished belief.

4. If we keep compartmentalizing conversations or debates
we'll end up having a kitten pic/rainbow lounge and a corn flakes/olive garden lounge and a nekkid/clothed lounge and....oooohhhh  I'm getting dizzy

Heated debates in the lounge are fine as long as they are debates and not content-free shouting matches.

on edit: obligatory Lounge inclusion of cute critters.

7. Sweet jeebus, no.
Compare the GD thread about the Mom/kid booted from the plane, here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=1314057&mesg_id=1314057

to the Lounge thread on the same topic.

Moving one from the Lounge to GD would be like having a fender bender and then moving the car onto railroad tracks.

8. I personally try to refrain from such topics, but I would feel uncomfortable
with compartmentalizing topics of discussion, because so many fall into a sort of grey area. I do agree that the lounge should be a pleasant place to hang out, with music, casual talk and some silliness thrown in. I come here to get away from any heavy topics.

15. the powers that be make discretionary use of moving threads
from gd to the lounge. lateral positioning. place is a free for all here lately anyway. if what you are proposing is done, then perhaps 'they' would consider lounge threads for the greatest page, again with 5 votes at the discretion of said 'powers that be'. already if 'they' don't consider it 'greatest page' worthy then 'they' peremptorily move said thread to the lounge. meh -- whats da use. i need a drink.

Or lock them. Moving them into the lounge is like poisoning the only clean water supply remaining.

someone is calling someone else a nasty name within the first two responses. Then they know it's a GD thread.

20. No, I don't think so
Just like I really don't like it when GD threads that are seen as "not GD topics" are moved here. If the people here are the ones who start it, it should stay here where we can finish it.

I don't really want a sanitized Lounge that is nothing but a bunch of people all smiling and wearing flowers in their hair. I don't mean I enjoy flamewars but arguments among friends are perfectly normal.

39. All y'gotta do is ask
:7

I'd like to have an argument, please.

Certainly, sir. Have you been here before?

No, this is my first time.

I see. Do you want to have the full argument, or were you thinking of taking a course?

Well, what would be the cost?

Yes, it's one pound for a five-minute argument, but only eight pounds for a course of ten.

Well, I think it's probably best if I start with the one and see how it goes from there. OK?

Fine. I'll see who's free at the moment... Mr. DuBakey's free, but he's a little bit conciliatory. Try Mr. Barnard, room 12.

Thank you.

The man walks down a corridor. He opens door 12. There is a man at a desk.

What do you want?!

Well I was told outside ...

Don't give me that, you snotty-faced heap of parrot droppings!

What??

Shut your festering gob, you tit! Your type makes me puke! You vacuous, toffee-nosed, malodorous PERVERT!

Look! I came here for an argument!

Oh! I'm sorry, this is abuse.

Oh I see, that explains it.

No, you want room 12A next door.

I see. Sorry. (exits)

Not at all. (as he goes) Stupid git.

(Man knocks on the 12A door.)

Come in.

Is this the right room for an argument?

I've told you once.

No you haven't.

Yes I have.

When?

Just now!

No you didn't.

Yes I did!

Didn't!

Did.

Didn't!

I'm telling you I did!

You did not!

I'm sorry, is this a five-minute argument or the full half-hour?

Oh — just a five-minute one.

Fine, thank you. Anyway, I did.

You most certainly did not.

Now, let's get one thing quite clear: I most definitely told you.

You did not.

Yes I did.

Didn't.

Yes I did.

Didn't!

Yes I did!!

Look, this isn't an argument!

Yes it is.

No it isn't, it's just contradiction!

No it isn't.

Yes it is!

It is not.

It is! You just contradicted me!

No I didn't.

Ooh, you did!

No, no, no, no, no!

You did, just then!

No, nonsense!

Oh, look this is futile!

No it isn't.

I came here for a good argument.

No you didn't, you came here for an argument.

Well, an argument's not the same as contradiction.

It can be.

No it can't. An argument is a connected series of statements to establish a definite proposition.

No it isn't.

Yes it is! It isn't just contradiction!

Look, if I argue with you, I must take up a contrary position.

But it isn't just saying "No it isn't."

Yes it is.

No it isn't! Argument is an intellectual process! Contradiction is just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says!

No it isn't.

Yes it is!

Not at all.

Now, look!

(rings bell on his desk) That's it. Good morning.

But I was just getting interested.

Sorry, your five minutes is up.

That was never five minutes just now!

I'm afraid it was.

(hopefully) No it wasn't.

I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to argue any more.

What!?

If you want me to go on arguing, you'll have to pay for another five minutes.

But that was never five minutes just now! Oh, come on! This is ridiculous!

I'm very sorry, but I told you I'm not allowed to argue unless you've paid.

Oh. all right. (hands over a pound) There you are.

Thank you.

Well?

Well what?

That was never five minutes just now.

I told you I'm not allowed to argue unless you've paid!

I've just paid!

No you didn't.

I did! I did! I did!

No you didn't.

Look, I don't want to argue about that!

Well, I'm very sorry, but you didn't pay.

Well, if I didn't pay, why are you arguing? Aha, got you!

No you haven't.

Yes I have. If you're arguing, I must have paid.

Not necessarily. I could be arguing in my spare time.

I've had enough of this!

No you haven't.

Oh, shut up!

44. There's more to it
but it gets into Complaints, Being Hit on the Head Lessons, Section 21 of the Strange Sketch Act with Inspector Fox of the Light Entertainment Police, Comedy Division, Special Flying Squad, and Inspector Thompson's Gazelle of the Programme Planning Police, Light Entertainment Division, Special Flying Squad, who says:

"Now, I'm arrestin' this entire show on three counts: one, acts of self-conscious behaviour contrary to the Not In Front of the Children Act; two, always saying 'It's so-and-so of the Yard' every time the fuzz arrives; and, three — and this is the cruncher — offenses against the Getting Out of Sketches Without Using a Proper Punchline Act; four, namely, simply ending every bleedin' sketch by just having a policeman come in and... wait a minute!"

(Another policeman enters.)

"Hold it!"

"It's a fair cop!"

Just because I know the people. The ones in GD seem to get vitriolic. And I don't know the folks, and many sometimes seem trollish to me. In here I have a bit more trust that we have a genunine disagreement instead of someone intentionally disrupting because it amuses them.
