Sometimes travel just stinks |
|
I am in Reno, NV for a conference; flew here from Michigan. I swear, the only less convenient spot for a conference would be Mars. It took me fourteen hours to get here; my first flight was delayed three hours, missed the second they booked me on because the ticket agent left out critical information about the next ticketing stop; had to fly from Detroit to Minneapolis to L.A. to Reno. One of my suitcases went to Alaska and didn't arrive until the next morning. I have a balance problem - only have one inner ear - and need to walk with a cane sometimes if there are slopes, uneven ground, or intensely patterned carpets or walls. My cane broke in Minneapolis; the rubber tip came off someplace and was nowhere to be found. This hotel has intensely patterned carpets, twinkling lights on the walls, and flashing slot machines everywhere. It's not near anything and there is no place to buy a cane. I had to get a 'loaner' from the hotel; it's ugly as sin but they made me sign a paper promising not to steal it (!). I can't walk very well without it, I don't know many people here, and I feel guilty when the ones I DO know have to slow down to walk with me. I'm thinking of skipping the closing party; a cruise on Lake Tahoe because I know it's going to be hard for me to walk on the boat, the people I know best are leaving early and not taking the cruise, and I hate asking people I don't know well to help me. I hate asking for help in general but at least it's easier when I know the people.
Wah. I want to go home.
