Lulu Buffett is Jimmy's sister.

“When I first opened LuLu’s Sunset Grill, I thought…hey, a little place on the water to get a cold beer and a good burger, just like my daddy would have loved after a long day of fishing. How hard could it be? After working for some of the meanest folks in Hollywood, this would be a piece of cake, right? Wrong! It’s one of the toughest things I’ve ever done. The restaurant biz is not for the faint of heart.

Since the beginning of “LuLu-time,” I would fire myself about once a year because I just couldn’t take another crazy catastrophe like…the key kitchen staff calling from jail needing to be bailed out before the Saturday lunch rush. But, the people in my family have never been very good at coloring inside the lines, and we’ve bailed plenty of folks out of jail after a wild night. We don’t seem to do things the way normal people do. My mother blames it on chance. My father blames it on the tides. My sister blames it on my brother. And my brother blames it on my grandfather, who, as you may have heard the song, really has no one to blame, and we like it like that."

Five years later, LuLu opened a new restaurant on the Intracoastal Waterway in Gulf Shores, AL., after the state decided not to renew her lease on Weeks Bay. It was a bitter sweet move, but like any Buffett faced with a decision, she decided to throw a party and move forward. She enlisted the help of a buddy with a barge and, literally, moved the whole venue by water. “Why be normal, why do things the ‘right’ way? I keep this place and my dreams going by riding out the storms and adjusting to the tides. It’s a special place, and I invite you to come and enjoy. LuLu’s is a state of mind, really. It’s a great escape, a great family spot. We’re all about good food, good folks, good music, and good times. A place to confirm that "life is good……." “

1. What a neat looking place, trof.
Never been to Alabama, but I'm going to have to get down there one day. I would love to sail through the intracoastal waterway someday. I think that would be a great trip.

4. Have you done it before?
I'm starting to look into it a bit for maybe next Spring.

It just seems like such a cool thing to do.

Any tips?

9. I haven't, but friends have cruised it.
Not in a sailboat, but a lot of folks do.
I live on Wolf Bay, about 5 miles north of the ICW.

I could tell you about some good places to anchor overnight.
Pirate's Cove on Roberts Bayou (great burgers).
Ingram Bayou. Absolutely pristine, no sign of civilization.
At least not yet, but that's changing fast down here.

And right across the bay from me is the fabled Wolf Bay Lodge, a really neat old waterfront dive with great local seafood.

There's 4' average depth at my dock, 8-9 feet in the center of the bay.
