Hometown Boys lead singer passes away

Conjunto singer and bass player Ricky Martinez died early Friday.

His age and details of his death were not immediately available, but the official Web site for his family’s group, The Hometown Boys, announced the death.

Martinez was the lead vocalist of The Hometown Boys, a Grammy Award-winning ensemble known to fans as simply “The Homies.”

He was a founding member when the band was formed in 1970 as El Grupo Internacional de Ricky y Joe Martinez. The group was renamed in 1990.

The band originated in Lubbock and consisted of the entire Martinez family.
