Anybody ever hear of/see "Shanghai Tan" also known as "Shanghai Bund"? |
|
The original starred a young Chow Yun-Fat and is considered to be the Chinese "Godfather." And, it launched Chow on his way to stardom - I think almost any girl that turned older than 10 in China during the 1980s probably fell in love with him because of this series.
They recently re-made it in Mandarin with new stars, and even re-did the famous theme song in Mandarin from the original Cantonese.
I've been trying, in vain, to find either version of it with English subtitles.
I've tried eBay, and some asian DVD/VCD places, but the only ones I've seen have simplified Chinese subtitles.
My sister-in-law just had the new version in Mandarin sent to my wife, but I can't really watch it because of the lack of English subtitles. And, I don't expect my wife to translate all 42 hours of it to me, either.

I figured, at best, one or two regulars at DU would known of it. It was a long-shot because there might not be an easily available one with English subtitles (I hate dubbed movies - the lips not matching the voice drives me crazy!)
I posted a few "comments" on YouTube looking for help in finding a version with English subtitled version as well. There were dozens of different versions of the show's famous theme song on there, so hopefully that will pan out eventually.

7. my wife will be thrilled |

if I could watch it with her.
Unfortunately, I saw an online forum that is looking for volunteers to help add English subtitles to this genre of serials from China. Not a good sign, since it was posted in May of this year.
Interestingly, in China and Hong Kong, TV shows are filmed in advance and might run 30-40-50-60 episodes... but, they'll run every weeknight until done. So, a 30 episode serial will run every night for 6 weeks and, then it will be done.

8. Do you have an Asian network available to you? |
|
We do here in the SF Bay Area - I know there are some serials that seem to last a lifetime and have such a huge following.

We get The Phoenix Channel on DISH Network... They have a nightly serial every night at 8pm. They usually run for at least 6-8 weeks.
and, if her parents ever visit us for an extended stay, we'll likely get DISH's "Great Wall" package that offers like 15 Chinese language channels.
