1. I don't know.
It's possible that she is doing well with a very shallow, one-note role. It's possible that the writers are really the ones ruining her character. But then again, it could be that she really can't act.

Radcliff can act. He gets better in every movie. But then again, his character requires some range. He's got a lot more to work with.

He just never did look the part.

2. she doesn't bother me at all
in fact, she seems to be playing the part fairly close to as written. I don't think she's great, mind you, but I also don't find her to be a Keanu or anything either.

4. She plays Hermione Granger better than anyone I've ever seen.
But my ability to judge acting may be off kilter because I watched Star Wars Episode II yesterday and compared to Hayden Christiansen everyone is a good actor.

6. Oh god!
Not only was he terrible, but he was particularly bad in the second episode. Somewhere, Keanu Reeves is smiling.

5. Hard to say. I don't think the role challenges her much.
I don't know if that's the director's fault or hers. She got the role so young that she may have grown away from it, and might do much better in a different kind of role. Even the best actors have roles that aren't suited for her. But I agree that she's the most awkward actor of the main characters. Although Fred and George aren't that good, either.

With all her attempts to get out of the role, I'm not sure she's giving it her best.

Edited on Wed Jul-18-07 05:22 AM by regnaD kciN
...but I was amused, when the first film came out, to note that, somehow, the plain, frumpy-looking Hermione Grainger from the books had turned into The Hottest 11-Year-Old In Great Britain by the time the story made it to screen.

The way I see it, the studio figured they had at least seven years of these films to go, and the pre-teen boys who were the prime market for the first movie would be in their late teens or early twenties when the final episode came out, and would require somewhat more sophisticated "eye candy" to bring them to the theaters than just some fancy special effects.

16. I think the producers hit the trifecta on all three...
Sometimes kid actors just don't develop over the years. They're cute props when originally cast, but never really turn out to be real actors. Remember the latter years of "The Waltons?" What a bunch of stiffs! I think all three kids in Harry Potter have real talent.

but maybe it is a writing issue.. I thought she was good in the first couple of movies, but lately she seems to be on the verge of tears all the damned time...

19. I think she's done a good job with a one-note role
Hermione isn't quite as fleshed out a character as Ron or Harry. You don't see her parents her home life. Her motivations for wanting to be at Hogwart's. All you know about her is that she's the class brainiac and can be quite bossy. Here's were the movies let Hermione down.

In the books, she has all the theme about muggles/mudbloods and human rights for house elves. She sees the discrimination and the class warfare and indirectly it brings up the theme of genocide... Voldemort wants to get rid of anyone who isn't pure-blooded.

So I think Emma Watson will be able to do whatever she wants when the HP movies are done. :-)

33. I Agree - It's The Role
The writers and directors not giving her much of a chance.
I don't think she ever seems fake or stiff, just flat. You get the sense she doesn't bring anything to the role, almost any young female actor could play it. Then again, she's cute. And even though in the books Hermione is at best plain, Emma Watson being cute makes Hermione endearing. Fortunately, even as she has grown she hasn't turned into a knock out - she's still cute. I'm not saying she's ready for something serious yet, but if she turns into the British Julia Roberts, she won't have done too badly

22. I think she's alright
not fantastic, but alright. I do think she's gotten better, but she still has some awkward line delivery. It's not as though Danial Radcliffe is better, really.

Rupert Grint is actually, IMHO, the best actor of the three main characters.

I end up distracted by the eyebrows. I think Rupert Grint is the strongest of the three.

breathless and on the verge of hysteria.

I'm really not down with her. I blame the directors somewhat for letting her get away with it.

34. She's come a LOOOOONG way from when they first started....
She's not terrible, but she does have a little ways to go. She says that acting is not more important to her than her education, and she's focusing on that right now. I think she's a great kid, and I think she's a great role model for kids. There are SOOO few of those. Better acting will come with more work. She'll get there.
