Anthony Bourdain weighs in on the animated movie "Ratatouille"

"I think it's quite simply the best food movie ever made,” Tony wrote today in an email. “The best restaurant movie ever made--the best chef movie. The tiny details are astonishing: The faded burns on the cooks' wrists. The "personal histories" of the cooks...the attention paid to the food...And the Anton Ego ratatouille epiphany hit me like a punch in the chest--literally breathtaking. I saw it in a theater entirely full with adults--and the reaction to that moment was what movie making was once--a long time ago--all about: Audible surprise, delight, awe and even a measure of enlightenment. I am hugely and disproportionately proud that my miniscule contribution (if any) early early in the project's development led to a "thank you" in the credits. Amazing how much they got "right."

1. I liked it too.
Bourdain is the Mr. T of the culinary world (he doesn't put up with fools or jibber jabber) and I agree with his review of Ratatouille.

4. It is a breathtaking film. I'm glad to hear Bourdain found it so authentic.
It works on several levels. It's a simple Disney "Outcast dares to dream and makes all his dreams come true" plot, but it is also one of the most amazing feats of animation I've ever seen, and the cuisine aspect is inspiring and educational. Incredible film.

Between Pixar and Studio Ghibli, animation is in its golden age.

5. Hubby and I went to see "Ratatouille" July 8.
It was a birthday gift to me. I asked that we see it. We both enjoyed the movie. Beside the story, we also noticed they got the rat movements down precisely. You see, we raise rats. One part did crack me up. It wasn't in the movie, but a little girl sitting behind us. In one scene, Remy is crossing the street. The people walking around were screaming, "Rat!!!" "They're disgusting!" The little girl behind us then said, "Rats are not disgusting. They're cute." I couldn't help but chuckle at that one.

8. This is my favorite Pixar movie so far.
I'm a huge fan of them. I can't remember the last time a movie made me so happy. When I left the theater the first thing that popped into my head was "So when's the DVD coming out?"

I wouldn't be averse to seeing it in the theater again. The only movie I've ever seen more than once in the theater was Beauty and the Beast back in 1991. Actually I think I saw that one three times in the theater. Twice with my mom, and once with my mom and grandmother, who thought it was too scary for me (I was twelve). I was like "I've seen this before. It's not scary." And then I got the VHS tape and watched it about seventeen trillion more times.

9. I liked it
I don't think it's geared to children though, more to adults, but the kids are going to flock to it because of the animation. I can't wait for the dvd, sounds like a good christmas present to me.

10. I thought it was good for the pure comedy of it
and because it brought a smile to my kids' faces. We are now playing the video game from the movie.
