Can I haz baby kitteh? Yez, I can. |
|
Couple of days ago I noticed one of the semi-feral "outside cats" had a roughly two month old kitten in tow. Mom is a tortie, barely grown herself, baby is a little grey one with subdued tiger stripes and blue eyes. Both are very shy around people, but also very inquisitive and very hungry. So for the past few days, I've been feeding them closer and closer to my house, in the garage and finally inside. Today I got the chance, and I closed the door. Mama kitty, ever the crafty one, made it out before the door closed. Baby kitty, who is weaned, didn't.
We'll see about getting feral baby to the vet for flea treatment, a look at her runny eye and worming tomorrow, and when she quits hiding I'll try to get pics up.

4. Why isn't it a good idea to get the mother inside too? |
|
Aren't they going to miss each other?

5. I tried, because I want to get her fixed. |
|
But she got out before I got the door closed, and my main aim was the kitten.
Mom is probably not adoptable, because she's pretty afraid of people. I'll keep trying to get her fixed and I'll feed her as long as she keeps coming around, and if I can get her inside we'll see about making a people kitty out of her. Baby's young enough to be socialized, and her chances of survival are real poor as a feral (who knows what became of any littermates.)
The baby's big enough that they can be split up if needed. After all, if she were born here to a socialized mother she'd be about old enough to adopt out by now, if I'm about right on her age.

6. You know it's up to the cat :-) |
|
If she decide to train you, she'll come inside one day.
My father adopted an incredibly skittish cat that would bolt at the sign of people...now she actually crosses your path to stop you for attention and petting. Hope this is your experience as well!

9. LeftyMom, I had the same problem |
|
I had to order a feral trap over the internet to trap the kitten (Riff Raff, who I kept) - I then trapped the mom, got her fixed and released her because she was completely unadoptable...she still stops by for chow though LOL
