Poll question: Help me decide what to buy this churlish couple |
|
I recently joined a real estate firm (I switched allegiances) and the secretary sent everyone the following email:
"Alright So I have heard some of you haven’t got your invites so here you go Wedding Shower for the Couple (NAMES OMMITTED) At 7 pm On the creek it is a luau theme and a couple’s shower If you don’t know how to get there let me know I will get you directions For your information we are registered at: Macy’s Target Bed Bath & Beyond www.thehoneymoon.com "
At first, it seemed odd, a couple throwing their own shower. I think they've been living together for several years. But now, they are getting married and going on a honeymoon. So, I thought, OK, I'll play along. I went to the website at www.thehoneymoon.com, and I this is what I saw: Make Honeymoon Dreams Come True.Enter a purchase quantity for each gift you would like to purchase, then click "Calculate Total" at the bottom of the page.
FROM THE COUPLE
We look forward to your presence on our special day. Of course, all we ask is your presence. If you cannot attend, your thoughts and prayers are appreciated. We do realize that many of you may wish to give us a wedding gift to commemorate our union together. Since we already have most of the traditional wedding gift items, we have decided to offer our guests a popular new wedding gift alternative - our honeymoon registry. This will allow you to help us create the honeymoon memories that will last us a lifetime.
Here are the choices. Help me decide???

Good grief.......What were they thinking? Or were they? :eyes:
Good luck!
You...and they ....will need it!

4. It's so awful, it is actually funny,. |
|
I'm not going to the shower. But I have to be nice and give them something, I suppose. I refuse to give one of these "gifts" though. Really, what do I do?

3. this seems kind of tacky |
|
I really know nothing about this kind of thing, but it seems so gauche.
Maybe they should have just passed a hat at the shower.

I haven't been asked to showers nearly as much as my sister for her straight friends. It seems that when there is always an affair going on and lots of gifts to be bought. Most of the committment ceremonies my friends have had have been very casual; maybe it's just that I have non-traditional friends. I've certainly never been asked to fund someone's honeymoon.

Just sayin'. Never give a gift if it doesn't feel good.

9. That is, bar none, the tackiest thing I've ever seen. |
|
I'd send them NOTHING.
Is there an etiquette rule that they DIDN'T break in this situation?

However, if you did want to give them a helpful gift while at the same time shunning their stupid "registry," you could put together a carry-on bag for their flights. Get some kind of cheap bag, fill it with earplugs, travel pillows, snacks, Airborne, a couple of magazines/paperbacks, etc.
Then to teach them a lesson, sew one of the following into the lining: a larger than four ounce bottle of liquid, illicit drugs, toy handgun, batteries and a couple of wires, etc.

With clowns like this, it makes a "STATEMENT" that is so subtle they might miss it, but if they don't...a REAL comeuppance.
