Electric bill received. First month of full time Air Conditioning.
It only went up $15!!! :bounce:

50 cents a day for comfort? Yeah I can deal with that.

Very happy to be living in a well insulated house now with a modern system.

Our electic bills last year were WAY more than twice this.

20. AND I've got 3 phase, which is supposed to be cheaper!!
Cheaper than 2 phase which most people have. Three phase is more efficient, I am told.

3. Did you insulate the old place?
Or move to a new house?

Yeah, GA is pretty bad without A/C. Open the windows, and somehow the mosquitos and gnats find their way past the screens.

5. We moved.
This place is much better insulated and also smaller.

We had much more space than we needed in the old place though.

4. Mine was $140 this month
For a one-bedroom apartment. But they recently fixed my a/c, added coolant, and changed the filter. So next month might not be as bad. Still OUCH.

6. Wow. That is high for a small space.
I hope the repairs give you some relief.

7. Are you SURE there is an (A) next to your usage....
as opposed to an (E)?

They can be tricky!

14. I think the poster is referring to estimated(E) or actual(A) reading
We have it with our gas bill, one month meter is read, the next month estimated.

16. The fact that he/she didn't "groc" those abbreviations immediately....
leads me to suspect that the reading might be estimated.

Hope I'm wrong!

17. No. The meter is read every month.
I guess house is just really efficient, which I'm really grateful to find out.

The last one was a beast. Not only that but the toilet would back up every time it rained.

8. Our total electric was only $100 last month
I was impressed. We use window air conditioners..a large one for the entire downstairs and individual ones for the bedrooms. Normally we'd be at $125-$150. What I did different this year was to drag out this old huge window fan and place it in our hallway window at the top of the stairs. We mostly use the lowest setting, it has 3 and med & high are sometimes too much. Luckily, even with our above average hot temps, we had cooler nights and I'd draw the air into or out of the house depending. In turn, we didn't have to turn on the ac's until much later in the day.

Here's a link to a newer version of the fan..much lighter weight and smaller than the one we have.

This one is similar in size and probably power..although it's a different brand.

12. That's great. We have a central unit, but close off rooms not in use.
Close the vents too.

15. Good idea.
I think central units are much more efficient, especially combined with a well insulated home. My son has a new home and his central air doesn't raise his bill much at all.

Our house was born sometime in 1880's..and we have boiler/radiator heat so we're stuck with window units unless we win the lottery! :)

9. Mine was $75
That's with 3 window air conditioners (all older than methuseluh). Of course, they rarely get run all at the same time. Usually, I just run the one in the room I'm in, and if it's going to be unbearably hot (85+ degrees and 70+% humidity) while I'm at work I'll leave one on low for the animals. This is actually an increase from last year when my highest bill was $80 for all three running 24/7 for a whole month (they really hiked rates here). I'm dreading August and that bill, because with much reduced ac usage and my light-switch vigilance (now I know how my poor mother felt yelling at us all the time) I'm still almost at my power gluttinous high of last summer. I try to be very thrifty with power consumption, and my place is shaded much of the day by close neighbors on both sides so that helps a lot, but the house is a leaky ass 75 year old seive.

Not sure what I'm going to do this winter, I'm praying for a very mild season, I can't handle gas prices like last year.

10. I just got our new bill
$180. Our house is about 1350 sq. ft. We have central A/C.

Last year we were in a home half this size and using window units, and our bills were about the same. I think our bills are about the same because this is a much newer home and better insulated.
