Help with an internet/phone harasser/hacker
Hi everyone! I’ve been away a lot lately, but I do miss these boards!

Anyway, I have a problem:

Apparently I pissed someone off or he just took an interest in me on another board (film director fan board). He basically started posting a lot of personal information about me on the site, and pretended to live in the same town as me, etc. He was able to get my full name because I stupidly used it as my username, and had posted a few personal bits of info in the course of the past 3 years – like where I lived. I ignored him for a long time, until, after a few months, I idiotically posted something in which I inadvertently conformed that I was the person he was targeting.

He then posted my address and phone number to the board. That night, I got several calls from him (though I wasn’t there). He posted my answering machine message on youtube. I tried to *69 him but his line was private or out of area.

I contacted the admin of the board, who deleted the offending messages, and shut down the board to new members after kicking off the offender (s – he was registered under at least 2 names). We’re pretty sure it was the same guy who hacked the forums a few months previously. He has the ability to change his IP address, though I’m not sure how that works.

Soon thereafter, he began to use a VOIP service to call me in the middle of the night. He would use it, actually, to have me call someone else. I simply hung up, and disconnected the phone line at night, which shut him down for a while. Then he called like 8 times on a weekend day when we were out of town, and made a few harassing calls to someone else using my phone as an initiator. He also seemed to be configuring the VOIP or some such. It’s very difficult for me to figure out.

I contacted the VOIP service (which luckily identified itself when you picked up the phone and it was trying to contact the other number), and they blocked my number. I also contacted my phone service and signed up for all the blocking services (id, blocking, intercept).

I hadn’t heard form him again for about 6 weeks, but then this weekend, the little shit used a different VOIP to have my call intercept phone the police 12 times at 2AM. So at 2AM my wife and I are woken up by officers banging at our door and the phone ringing simultaneously. It was really freaky, and I’m surprised I didn’t keel over right then from a heart attack.

We spent 30 minutes explaining to the officers what we thought was going on. We’ve filled out a police report (which we should have done 2 months ago), and hopefully, now that they’re involved they’ll pay a little attention to it.

Anyway, I’m just a normal guy, why won’t this little f*ck leave me alone! I’m not enough into this h@x0r stuff enough to know how hard this guy is going to be to catch or what I can do to stop him. We’ll probably end up changing our number, but it was unlisted to begin with, so he may just see this as another fun challenge in his exciting life of sitting behind a computer, covered with grease and irritating honest people whenever he has DOOM3 downtime.

Any thoughts/ideas? Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to block his calls. I think the call intercept has actually made this easier for him, because it picks up the line where I would not, which allows the VOIP to connect to the other side of the line. Are these calls traceable to him if he’s able to change his IP with whatever hax0r tools he has at his disposal. How far am I going to have to go to get someone to stop him (Police/FBI/DHS/Interpol?)

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I’ve asked everyone I can around here for help and most people are clueless. DUers are generally more technically savvy.

Thanks!

1. I don't know a thing about this.
But I will kick it for the afternoon crowd.

Nice to see you here, 4LG, it's been a long time. Sorry to hear that you're having trouble.

2. I think I would get the police involved.
I don't know a darn thing about VOIP, but I don't like the sound of this. He is stalking you and to no good end.

And, as far as the normal guy thing goes, I feel your pain. I had someone post all my personal information on a site and try to get me in trouble at my job for some things I had posted at a different site and it was pretty scary.

The thing is, if you have posted your real name anywhere on the net, the stalker can get your information through any of the political contribution sites.

I'm sorry this is happening to you, but it is really good to see you again!

3. I'm so sorry for what you're going through.
This is extremely frightening. Washington state recently passed an internet stalking law, I know. I'm not sure what resources are at your disposal in your community.

It's nice to see you again, though; I'm just sorry it's under these circumstances. :(

4. I'm dealing with the same thing from someone here.
Though not quite as serious as your guy, who sounds far more intent on scaring the hell out of you. Mine is just a control freak old lady with a really inflated sense of her own importance who is pissed that I disagreed with her on some of her threads.

PM me and I'll let you know what I did.

5. maybe cross post this in the computer forum?
some really good techy types in there. Scary. Good luck! Having the cops involved is probably a good thing, not that they will be all that effective but when he finds out it might cause him to cool it.

7. Local police is fine but using the services that he is
he's violating several FEDERAL laws. Contact the FBI, also.

8. FBI, most definitely.
Even if he's your next door neighbor, you can bet at least one or two of his hacks have gone interstate with a VOIP.

The FBI is not amused by this shit.
