Southerners...are y'all as sick of the afternoon thunderstorms as I am?
A month ago, when my garden was dying, I would have given anything for afternoon showers.

For the past three weeks, we've not had a single afternoon without heavy thunderstorms. I hate being penned inside when there's so much I want to do outside.

Are you guys getting as much rain as we are?

1. It's been raining almost non-stop here for 6 weeks.
So, to answer your question, hell yes I'm sick of the rain. August is coming, there will be plenty of sun then, I'm sure.

3. I just want to cry.
I got the fishing gear out this afternoon, was going to take MMjr. fishing at the state park.

Then I heard a rumble. Shit! Now stuck inside until nearly dark.

Can't swim in the pool, can't camp out, can't do a darned thing I had planned for the summer.

I got the front done before it started raining on Saturday. I was going to take care of the back today. Bzzzt! Thunderstorms earlier today. x(

Madrone has good timing. Her visit here was during the one nice week we had in June. :D

6. We went on vacation to Gatlinburg...
during late June. It rained in Gatlinburg EVERY afternoon we were there. We learned to time our activities around the afternoon storms.

Then we got home. And we've been stuck inside ever since.

My yard? We don't have a yard, so to speak, because we're in a forrest--but the weeds! Oh, it's a nightmare. Since Katrina took down the big hickories aroumd the cabin and sunlight's been able to get in, we've had an onslaught of "pig weed" around the cabin. I'm going to have to rent one of those walk-behind bushhogs to clear the area around the cabin...I don't really have a choice...the weeds are four feet high and an excellent place for water moccasins to hide when they come out of the creek. :grr:

35. I was on a conference call today with someone in my company
who is working in Austin. Says the weather has been horrendous.

We could use a little rain up here actually. My front lawn is looking pretty sorry and I'm not big on watering it. No matter what you do here, it'll die eventually in the summer.

12. We have sandy soil around the cabin...
the canopy of trees that we had until Katrina prevented grass from growing on the forest floor where our cabin sits...

But Katrina took out several of those trees, and now the weeds are running amok and I can't find time to mow them between the storms.

:(

Glad to know that someone else has a dirt lawn. :D

Bad thing is, tracking in that stuff--can't keep the floors clean, and I abhor grit on the floor.

The afternoon showers has made it cooler working on the soon to be upstairs room.

The house was built in 1930 and it only took 77 years to finish the room.

Just wish the people who need the rain could get some.

28. 'Water cops' tag homes, threatening $500 fines
A woman at the house, who was retrieving her soggy newspaper, said they already had reduced the irrigation run time to eight minutes from 10 and still were trying to figure out their new controller. "We've been trying to key it in and not get overspray," said the woman, who declined to give her name. "The controller is new for me; our gardener knows how to run it."

It was one of four houses Muelrath tagged within an hour during his morning patrol. In each case, sprinklers were running and water was flowing freely over sidewalks. He made a note to alert his staff to check three other houses and a business that had water covering the sidewalk.

They will be given 30 days to fix the problems or will face the possibility of $500 a day in fines -- or even have water turned off.
It is all part of the city's stepped-up water conservation program that includes patrols by Muelrath and three full-time "water cops" during the day and at night. They look for homes and businesses where there is overwatering or signs of broken irrigation or plumbing systems.

The city has also set up a hot line, 543-3985, for water waste reports.

going to complain about rain right now. We were on fire for 8+weeks 40 miles up the road. Yep we need it.

The good thing is the rains usually pass pretty quickly and you can get back to what you were doing. Like cutting the yard every 4 days. Maybe I will complain, a little.

29. We've not had a burn-ban at all this spring and summer.
We were really dry up until July. I know that we were lucky.

The storms here set in for all afternoon...so once they come, it's pretty much shot until evening. WE've done a lot of swimming at night, but hardly any during the day this summer.

But yeah, the mowing. I sympathize with you on that.

36. I wish we had more rain right now
I am used to living in the mountains and having those storms every afternnoon, it seems in the flatlands it clouds up but most of the time nothing happens. The thunder-storm hating dog has been a real pain to deal with this year too; he stands on his hind legs and barks at the sky when it thunders, when the storm is right overhead and then he will run back and forth in his pen (the pen is just for thunderstorms so he doesn't run himself to death in the yard) and 'chase' it. Sigh... :eyes:
