And it's just an 'ok' neighborhood. Isn't that insane. How about your neighborhood?

And don't ask "why don't people buy". $1300 a month wouldn't cover the mortage on a treehouse these days.

Not on campus, but $600 is about normal for two bedrooms. I had a pretty nice two bedroom for $400 in 1999. A one bedroom is about $500 here now.

12. And that is exactly why I live in the suburbs.....
Got priced out of the city. The purchase prices for condos were ridiculous in areas with no parking, and the real estate taxes sky high.

Disclaimer: I own a condominium and am not a renter. No clue what rents are around here, but many of the rental buildings around here are motel-style (no entry lobby and hallway for security) and those were a tad scary to me.

At least it is a suburb with good restaurants and cool shopping.

Near West burb? :) We're considering a permanent relocation to Oak Park because we are rapidly being priced out of the city and rents/condo real estate in OP seem MUCH more reasonable.

for a 3-bedroom. Highland Park, TX

I can't recall if we even have apartment complexes within the town limits. But a quick search by my house provided this range.

You can find lower rents the further away from the Park Cities area you go.

33. Not Much More Affordable
All rents in the NY tri-state are based on Manhattan rents. So an apartment in Brooklyn or Hoboken, NJ will rent for about 85% or 95% of what Manhattan rents for.

Brooklyn rent = .85($3,000) = $2,550.

37. I'm not being disrespectful, but
I know that the rents in the boroughs don't come close to those in Manhattan.

In my building, for instance, studio apartments rent for $3,000.00 and up.

I used to live in Queens, in a very nice neighborhood, in 2004.
I paid $1,975.00 a month rent, and utilities were included. The apartment had two bedrooms, and a huge terrace. When I left, the rent went up to apprx. $2,100.00. A similiar apartment in Manhattan would be at least 3 and half times that amount -- minimun.

13. Incredibly cheap
Looking at the ads in the local paper, there is one 1 bedroom for $295/month and a 2 bedroom for $350/month. $560 for the new "luxury" apartments.
We have single family homes in my neighborhood. The homes range from roughly $80,000-$180,000. Most of them are 3+ bedrooms. There are less expensive homes in our town, as low as $40,000, but those are small and trashy and across town.

28. You can find that in parts of NYC, even parts of Manhattan.
But not in the most popular or scenic parts of Manhattan. Still, lots of folks like "upstate Manhattan" and the outer boroughs.

We lucked into a 2BR in Yonkers, the first suburb north of NYC for $1400. 1100 sf, top floor of a two-family house. Quite nice.

Small town north of the Cities, so it's all basically a 'good' neighborhood. Olberstarr's congressional district. The one I'm looking at is in a secure building and has a big bedroom, decent-sized living room, dining area, kitchen, brand new dishwasher and A/C, three closets, storage area, and free heat and hot water, for $634 a month. pretty good area, convenient to mall, grocery store, interstate highway, nice pool and hot tub,

My daughter's apartment from last year.

There are some 1 BR nearer to my house that are around $375.

However there really is a broad range of apt prices. Downtown apts are $750 for 1 BR but you can walk to work and if you are energetic, to a Super Target (it is about a 20 minute walk actually) so you could actually not need a car....and these are fancy apartments.

A cute little converted garage in a middling neighborhood just 2 miles from the office. I share no walls with the main house, and I have half the yard to myself. I likes it. Tennessee is a lousy state to be an employee, but the cost of living is reasonable away from the cities.

79. I probably shouldn't gloat
But I spend about $10 a week on gas. That covers going to work, going to the grocery store, and almost daily trips to the park to play disc golf. I'm trying to perfect the art of living cheaply. If it's any consolation, I don't make much money to begin with.

66. That is insane. Decent flat, decent neighborhood (eh?), $700.
keeps going up

oh well, at least my overpriced house will continue to appreciate, er...hold value, er...what????

I pay about $1000 a month for a three bdr/2br house with a private back yard, cool house, with a roommate, so split down the middle. Like it so much more than any apartment I ever had.

72. My mortgage is 400/mo for my small house & 15 acres.
Its around 800sqft on 15 acres with NO NEIGHBORS! The great part is it's only a five year mortgage and will be paid off by the end of the year.

But go into downtown where the new lofts are and it can be $1200-1500.
Right now I'm living in a 2 bdrm duplex for $825. It's good size, just wish it had a yard.

No pool. Nothing special.

I'm going shopping for cheaper lodgings for this winter.

84. At the very low end - $700
It's not unusual to find an average 1 bdrm going for $1000+/month in Edmonton.

Landlords are gouging - some tenants are having their monthly rent doubling because of the housing shortage.
