I was born there under the post-war Naval Government of Guam, was seven months old when we moved stateside, have never been there since. I posted a KIA on my website the other day who was from Agana Heights. I couldn't find it with Google Earth, but speculate it is on the high ground above Agana. My parent's quonset hut was on a cliff immediately above Agana - so I figure he was probably my "homeboy"

after that, so my Mom got to travel that whole region as a teenager. Guam was pretty much undeveloped at that time. She says the golf course had grass, but the greens were sand. A thin layer of sand on the hard ground. No grass on the greens.

Agana was pretty much leveled by the Japanese when they invaded.
We had a Chamorro housekeeper, Helen, who told many stories of the occupation.
Said that when the Americans finally landed to retake the island, the villagers ran down to the beach, waved flags and such to show where they lived, avoid "collateral damage," since they were in locations other than where they might be expected.
The Chamorro people had a song they sang during the brutal Japanese occupation.
It referred to Uncle Sam, but they pronounced Sam "sahm"
Part of it was: "Sam, Sam, Please come back to Guam"
I guess that referred to your grandfather, among others.
Somehow I don't think the Iraqis will be looking back at our occupation with fondness; they'll view us as the Chamorros did the "damn japs" as Helen called them.
I weep for my country.
