What is the greatest console video game of all time?
No poll this time, because there are too many good choices.

1. Nintendo 64. Because cartridge systems automatically beat CD systems.
Edited on Wed Jul-18-07 07:47 AM by mainegreen
And Nintendo 64 was the best cartridge system.
The games rocked, the controller rocked, stable as hell, all around great system.

edited: crap: mis read as greatest console video game system, not greatest console video game. Best console video game? I'd still pick a N64 game: Zelda (obvious huh?). That game was absolutely the most engrossing perfect blend of everything.

5. Xevious
Good old fashioned video game with one joystick and a couple of buttons. Great graphics by 1980s standards. I'm just too &%$# old to handle the newer game systems!

21. That was my favorite as a kid!
I would play that game for hours. I played it so much that I got to a point where I could play the entire game, all 32 levels, without losing a single life. Yeah, I was a geek! Then when I got Tetris, you could not pull me away from my Nintendo. I still remember having bruises on my thumbs because of all the time I spent playing those games! But I guess the good thing is that it kept me out of trouble. :)

22. Did you enjoy it at the time?
Underwheming, the 2600 version was, but it was still... not unreasonably fun.

Even if Mr Hooper did hawk it...

26. Like, for two weeks.
Then, aware of the lazy effort put into the game and eyes hurting from the blinking and busy maze, went back to Space Invaders, Asteroids and Defender.

I was sad that Tempest for the 2600 never made it out of prototype.

13. Okay, here's mine. It's tough to choose just one, so:
The Super Star Wars Trilogy games for Super NES
Super Mario All-Stars (all 3 games in one)
Silent Hill (creepiest game ever)
Grand Theft Auto-Vice City (best of the franchise)
Gran Turismo 4
WWF War Zone (lots of fun kicking ass with my custom-made skinny green luchador named Torque)
Twisted Metal 2 - best of the TM series.
Ultimate Mortal Kombat Trilogy

many more. too many to mention

19. The Super Star Wars Trilogy is one of the most maddeningly difficult series I've played.
I *hated* the opening levels of Return of the Jedi.

14. Spyro the Dragon for the PS1
1998 game, was just about perfect.
Spawned several sequels, a couple average to bad, most good.

This October the next one in the series comes out.

And if you're feeling nerdy, I'd rank Chrystalis pretty high, even though I sucked ass at it.

23. Final Fantasy (the first one)
This was my first real experience with an RPG game. Although I never got involved with Dungeons & Dragons, I like the idea of controlling a small party of weak characters...building up their levels...getting more people (or whatever) to join your party...and on and on

The 1st Final Fantasy game also had a class change. Each character's physical appearance changed dramatically. Attack power (strength or magic) greatly increased, and a lot of weapons/armor can be equipped that couldn't previously.

27. FF2 and 3 for the SNES were darn good
I really liked 3 because it was the first RPG where the plot was non-linear, meaning you didnt have to do X then Y then Z to win; and you could choose from a number of different characters to have in your group at any particular time.

31. FF3 is my favorite one in the series
Now the series is too cartoonish for my liking. In FF3 I liked Umaro and Gau the best. At least that's what I think their names are. One was like a snow monster, and the other was a little guy who imitated attacks from enemies that he survived through. If both of them were in my party Umaro would pick Gau up, twirl him around in the air rapidly, then let loose turning him into a live slingshot.

The very first FIFA Soccer for the Sega Genesis.

Never had consoles after the Genesis.
