So, I got laid off today...note to self, don't work so damned hard
Wish I had got laid on, but that was not to be.

I got into work at 8am, the owner called me into his office and told me he had to let me go.

I asked if there was a problem with my work, the customer I handled was a difficult one but really liked me a lot. No. That was not the issue.

Simply put, they had hired 3 people full time in the last month, moved into new offices that cost a ton more money and the customer I handled had pre-paid for 2 years tech work so the work I did for them was non-billable - and since I got the main work done and they were happy, keeping me around would lose the company money.

I shit you not. I wish it had been something I did, at least that would be a good reason to me personally. Heck, yesterday I was on the phone with the CEO's wife of said customer and helping her out, and we she was pleased as punch with me and we spoke for about 20 minutes on things. And I was at home at the time, so it was work for free (I remoted in and fixed her issues, and the we talked about her own business and web site).

To make it all worse, they (the company that laid me off) called me this afternoon to make sure her issues were fixed, and I made sure to tell them that not only were they fixed (yesterday afternoon on my own time) but that she looked forward to working with me in the future (and other folks at the customer site were not happy with the previous techs they sent out, but they loved me).

And I know now that the new guy they hired will get laid off soon - they brought him in to help out with setting up 130 pcs for a client and centralizing how we manage them. Once that is all done, he will be gone next as they can handle things without him.

I quit a job making twice as much to work for them locally (less stress), and they promised to make me full time soon and I would get health insurance, etc. Two weeks after I quit my old job and threw myself into their projects, they laid me off because I got them done way ahead of schedule.

Try as I might this morning, I could not get the owner to tell me I did anything wrong. It was just a matter of money and they could not keep me. He told me he would give me a good reference and that I had done very well at what they asked me to do.

Something, anything, would have been better than that to me. "Hey, you do a great job but we can't keep you anymore as we don't have the work" after I left another job because I believed that they had a big future here and I wanted to grow along with them.

Fire me. Yell at me. Tell me I messed up something. Give me a reason you canned my ass so that I can work to improve myself - but don't tell me that I got all the work done and there is nothing else for me to do.

I am still stunned. I am getting my 401k and pension from my last job and will be ok for a spell, so it is not the money I am worried about right now. And I have already applied for two jobs locally and have a good prospect next week from a brother-in-law who is good friends with the owner of a big local company.

It just sucks - in the last few days my uncle died, celebrated my 9th year with the woman I loved and was excited about the future, then got laid off.

I need a break. The wife told me to take a month off and chill. Part of me wants to, but the provider part of me wants to snag the next job that comes along from gas station to data center manager.

Sorry for the rant - just needed to bitch to someone :)

2. That's happened to me twice
and a Fortune 50 company. You do great work, but we can't keep you.

So I sympathize with your idea that it's hard to maintain morale. For this reason, I've considered setting up my own consultancy.

3. I'm sorry.
I argue with almost everything you say, but even so, you don't deserve that.

I hope you find something better soon.

4. I am so sorry.
Mr. Writer went through a layoff at the beginning of this year in the tech area. Don't give up - the job market isn't as bad as it used to be.

5. That just sucks
I'm sorry the opportunity turned up a big zero.

I agree with your wife. You're daughter's not in school right now and this would be a time to make some wonderful memories with her. And with your wife. I see this as a gift and I hope you do too, once it stops stinging.

7. Straight Story...
This sucks.

I can't even believe that employers do this to good people.

All those shitty emotions that you may be feeling right now are perfectly normal.

And while i hate to use cliches, in my experience, a layoff has always been a blessing in disguise.

Good luck to you my friend, and take your comfort here and wherever you can.

8. My dear Straight Story....
Ah, sweetie, my heart goes out to you now...

You and I have talked quite a bit lately, and I've grown fond of you...

I hate like anything to see your indomitable spirit knocked down this way...

I hope that eventually you'll be able to see that this is more their loss than yours.....

Here's wishing you the bestest job ever!

13. I will rebound Peggy
And be better than ever. When I was 30 I left with only what I could fit in my car and started my whole life over.

I can do it all again - and will. It is just shocking to go from having two jobs to none in two weeks' time.

I have faith in myself. I am not so much worried as I am mad right now. I worked my ass off only to be told that, basically, I worked myself out of a job.

I can get unemployment and state health care for the wife if I need it (and she needs it). With the money I am getting from my old job I can make it by for many months without much worry. But I planned on being able to use that money as a buffer, now I need it to simply survive.

I will rebound, it will just take time and hard work. But I am somewhat gun shy now - I have always done my best for employers, and yet I keep getting screwed over. It's my dad in me I suppose. Always work hard, do your best, and you will do ok - except that he was screwed over big time by a company he invested many years in (He was their lead engineer and yet the only one without a college diploma. when they closed the regional office they asked him to stay on while they laid everyone else off, but it would require him moving - and he said no. They could have kept him here locally, but were too cheap to pay for an address.)

I have never had a company tell me I did poor work for them, ever. And yet all my hard work has netted me zero because I won't step on others and screw them over. When I was the manager of a team for the #2 bank in the US I did my best for my people, and it came to naught for me - but I did save their jobs several times. I was rated the best manager for 2 years in a row, but in the end that did not matter.

I keep doing the same thing - sacrificing for companies and getting jack in return. At 41 I have finally seen the light. It is not production they want, it is politics and BS.

And maybe I needed this wake up call, to strike out on my own. But then again I don't have the money or credit to do so.

Who knows, give me some time :)

12. Oh man...
I am so sorry.

I got laid off back in 2005, and it turned out to be a great thing. I got a job at the place I'm at now, which let me travel to California a bunch and earn a bunch more airmiles.

I hate to sound like a cliche. But everything happens for a reason, even if we don't know what it is at the time. Take some time to chill and relax (even just a few days), and then you can look at things with a fresh eye.

In the meantime, you'll have more time to spend in the lounge with us! :P

14. My experience from a previous job
is that useless people (especially ones who love to gossip) who do virtually nothing all day have some kind of secret talent to make them appear valuable. The rest of us could work 100 hours a week while whistling and we'd still be the ones laid off. (I quit that job because I was tired of above people so I haven't experienced the layoff yet.)

I've never faced a lay off situation (knocking on wood now) but my husband has. It's a blow to one's ego, no matter what the reason(s) given.

Hang in there!
