I saw something really nice this morning. |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-19-07 08:27 AM by fudge stripe cookays
Usually, the morning commute is so stressful...people cursing and making hand gestures, and tailgating.....ugh.
This morning, I was nearing this intersection I drive through every morning. (For Dallasites, it's Royal Lane heading west under Central). Traffic was acting weird so I craned my neck to get a better view to plan what I might have to do.
This poor woman had her car stall in the middle of the intersection, crossing multiple lanes, and messing up traffic in multiple directions (because of the access roads crossing under the highway overpass).
A truckload of lawn guys (you know...the quite possibly illegal ones Republicans can't stand but hire to do their lawns anyway? The ones who usually walk around with leaf blowers? The ones with such a terrible reputation for being lazy and freeloading?) stopped their truck, and three of them got out and pushed this woman's car into a nearby parking lot for her.
It's kind of like the Good Samaritan story in a way...the most maligned group, and those are the ones who actually got out of their vehicle and helped. Way to go, guys. That was a great thing you did.

5. Karma has a way of coming around |
|
about 15 years ago, when I was living in El Paso, a friend and I were on our way to a baseball game. (El Paso Diablos, great minor league team). We stopped for gas, and three "lawn guys" were having trouble with their pickup. So my friend got out his jumper cables and gave them a jump. No big deal, just took a minute.
Later, at the ball game, the beer guy came over and gave us each a beer, saying "those guys over there bought you a round." We looked over, and there were the three "lawn guys", one section over waving at us.

I think karma is a beautiful thing.
I had a waiter at my restaurant yesterday talk to me about medical benefits and insurance and such. He has a FRACTURED VERTEBRA! OUCH! And NO INSURANCE. Plus, he said he's diabetic. I felt terrible. That's a Michael Moore scenario right there.
Even though we couldn't afford it because I just quit my job, I gave him a $10 tip. I figure I'll stack up some good vibes for my job hunt.

6. one of those guys changed a tire for me last winter |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-19-07 09:00 AM by yellowdogintexas
I had a nasty blowout, pulled into parking lot of gas station off Belknap in downtown FW and was futzing around with the tire iron trying to get the wheel cover off and this raggedy car pulls up behind me, guy jumps out, makes gesture to assist and whips that tire into shape like lightening and would not even let me buy him a cup of coffee for his trouble. and it was damncold, too. It was also dark:30 as well.
I love your story Fudge, and it reminded me of mine. Thanks! And have a good day, and for what it's worth, I don't envy you that drive. I am visualizing it and getting a headache.

A few summers ago, on Hilton Head Island, my car broke down (it was the battery). Some guy in a big truck with racing car equipment stopped and helped EP and me. He was very well-dressed and had on some serious jewelry. Anyway, he was nice and helped us quite a bit in some major heat.
After he finished, he asked if we had accepted Jesus Christ as our savior. I told him I was Catholic and he handed us some literature about his church and then left. It was relatively painless and I appreciated that he helped us first, not knowing if we were "saved" in advance of offering his help. I'm glad it wasn't a requirement!

A year ago in early December, we had had a large overnight snowfall. Just before I left for work, the damn snow plow came down the street and plowed me into my space. It would have been impossible for me to leave without lots of shoveling...and I didn't have the time.
Some painters were arriving at a neighbor's house to work. Another neighbor was out in front shoveling her place and got really pissed off when she saw that I had been plowed in. Said neighbor was great and I miss her lots. She always shoveled or used the snow blower for us.
Anyway, suddenly she's talking to these guys in Spanish and they are agreeing with her. (I studied French and had no clue what the conversation was about.) Soon, she came back from the garage with every shovel she could find and within five minutes, she and the guys had me shoveled out.
:toast: to some great guys (who may or may not have been legal) and a terrific ex-neighbor.
