3. You need some accent marks in there... |
|
to really differentiate the sounds more. I picked two because I THINK that's my pronunciation.

just put an apostrophe where the accent is. You can do it on your keyboard. Like a dictionary does it.
Like Pe-kahn' Or PEE'-kan
Like that. See?

If y'all are from high society y'all call 'em ~ P'kahns. Out on the farm ... it's more like Pee-kahn.

8. Hmm. Odd. I'm a deep south rural redneck, and I've always said p'kahn. |
|
Maybe it's 'cause my parents were raised in New Orleans? Seems like most people I knew said it the way I did.

21. I think that might be part of my problem. |

I'm an army brat...so I've lived in Maryland and Alabama and Washington state and California and Texas and...
everyone says it differently. I don't even know if I say 'soda' or 'pop' (I usually cheat and defer to the specific name of the beverage. "Would you please bring me a Dr. Pepper?").
I hate when I get stuck on something STUPID like this and can't let it go.

30. That's another aspect. |
|
Gulfport, where I grew up, is sandwiched between a large Air Force base, a SeaBee base, a national guard camp, and several government research facilities, and was a minor tourist area for New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Jackson. So there was a mix of cultures and accents. Where I grew up was just north of the cosmopolitan area and just south of the extreme rural rest of Mississippi, so I got both, and could move easily between the groups. Plus, my mother was from New Orleans, and her father still had a slight German accent. Then I married an Air Force brat. So maybe I'm not typical.

I don't know HOW I pronounce it. It just kinda spills out and I don't think about it.
This morning, I made the mistake of thinking about it. And the more I thought about it...you know the rest.
