3. Just keep telling yourself that |

:toast:
I've got it on order, and my local independent book seller is having a party. I will probably wait until Saturday morning, though.

5. I would prefer a tone-deaf tenor singing the "Tom Bombadil" song 24 hrs straight. |
|
And for those of us who know our Tolkein well, that TRULY is the low point of the Ring Trilogy.

6. A much misunderstood character and scene |
|
Edited on Thu Jul-19-07 11:39 AM by TechBear_Seattle
Not to hijack my own thread, but the whole point of the Tom Bombadil scene is to explain why the Ring was so dangerous: it fed on a person's desires, reinforcing them and so turning it evil. Tom was able to put on the Ring and not vanish, then toss it back to Frodo as if it were nothing more than a curious looking turnip, because he had everthing his heart could possibly desire already; the ring had nothing to latch on to. Hobbits were largely immune from its influence because they in general were contented with what they had (Smeagol was greed from the beginning, which is how he got ensnared.) This scene should be contrasted with Gandalf's and Galadriel's desperate desire for the Ring and their only slightly more desperate desire not to let the Ring sink its hooks into them, and how Boromir stole the Ring and freed himself from its grasp only through his stronger sense of duty.
But yes, Tom's song does not rank as Tolkein's best poetry. And thanks for the f-ing earworm, I will have that song running around my head for the rest of the morning.

7. No cover charge: mine is Aretha Frankin singing "Who's Zoomin' Who?" |
|
Not a bad song to dance to, but a horribly repetitious earworm.

about anything Potter related. I never read any of the books and I tried to watch one of the movies but after 20 minutes, I shut it off.
