For some reason this documentary poped into my head. The "brother" Lions were away and the Lionesses had to find off a Hyena attack. The mother of the smallest cub broke her jaw in the encounter. Cost both her and her cubs life in the end.

Is it a fair division of labor? Maybe not but it seems to work for them. Besides only the top male gets taken care of so. The rest (90% maybe) are driven off the fertile hunting areas and must subsist in a life of isolation providing for themselves.
