for me - the cool breezes that come in from the Pacific Ocean at night. i usually throw open the bedroom windows and curl up underneath my quilt for some very restful sleep.

10. I love the swamp that abuts up against my backyard fence.
A wetland is the spillway of Lake Katherine Lake in Columbia SC. I have hawks and owls, deer and raccoons and turtles regularly visiting. The hummingbirds alone are worth it as are the migrating water fowl who rest here in the winter.

Also, Columbia,SC was recently cited as having excellent tap water (for drinking). Love to drink out of the tap rather then a palstic bottle.

11. The lack of regulation.
Back in MA, I could park on the street, go snorkling at the lake without needing a life guard, hike in the woods without tresspassing, build a shed without a zoning variance, bring my Swiss Army knife to school witout being arrested, use chalk at the gym and a bunch of other stuff. Ohio seems like a police state even out in the sticks by comparison.

Also in MA, even in the sticks, I could go my whole life without ever stepping foot in a McDonalds or an Olive Garden. The local places are too good and too numerous to bother with them.

30. Cool breezes at night.
What a coincidence. I think the fact that no matter how hot it gets here during the day the temperature drops 30 to 40 degrees at night in the summer and it's comfortable sleeping weather by 10 PM or so. We have central A/C but only used it overnight once, during the miserable heatwave in the SF Bay area this time last year.

52. isn't it lovely? . . .
we haven't turned our air on much, either. the oxygen machine that my husband is on for continuous O2 gets very hot and puts out a lot of heat - i have it in my hubby's bathroom and close the door (with the window wide open) - but still the front part of the house is much warmer than the back part. the ceiling fan is on 24/7 in the living room - if it starts getting too warm - the air will go on. thankfully, at night i can trust i'll be able to turn it off.

36. Ann Arbor--Big City Treats Without the Tricks; real country 10 miles in any direction
and surrounded by the Great Lakes, dotted by the little lakes, and 7.2% unemployment.

Arizona's governor says she won't take our water (although they expect population to double--no talk of limiting development, either). I think that's only because she won't be in office when they try.

There's lots of cheap housing now, and water, and the weather is 4 seasons, none of them unbearably long. There are roads, schools, theatres, nature and civilization. We average 1 murder a year in this city of 100,000+

40. Being 10 minutes away from the symbol of Massachusetts

Massachusetts takes its name from the Massachusett tribe of Native Americans, who lived in the Great Blue Hill region, south of Boston. The Indian term supposedly means "at or about the Great Hill," an apparent reference to the tallest of the Blue Hills, a recreation area south of the town of Milton.

Most of the goods and services I need are within a mile of me (banks, library, grocery stores, hardware places, health clinic and pharmacy, etc.) -- can even walk to both of my workplaces if I want. Or at least walk home from them. Bus service is pretty good -- between 6 AM and midnight, I can be downtown in 15 minutes without having to wait more than half an hour between buses.

The County set aside a third of our land for Agriculture. I live on its edge. We have nearly a million people here, and if I leave my neighborhood and turn left, I have an abundance of services within a couple of miles. If I turn right, I'm in the middle of corn fields within a mile and have no clue that I'm 20 miles outside of DC (except for the Aircraft waiting to land at Dulles or National).

Our Public School System was rated as #5 in the USA by Forbes for delivering the best bang for the buck, high test scores and graduation rates, and with a school population that is majority minority.

In this highly populated jurisdiction (more people than 6 states), there is not a single Republican holding elected office - not in the School Board, not in the County Council, not even the Clerk of Court. Hence, we have numerous Parks, excellent Roads, outstanding Schools and excellent public transportation.

There are, as evidenced by the lack of Republicans, more folks here with Graduate and Professional Degrees than in any other county in the US.

The Taxes here are higher than most places further south, but certainly nowhere near as high as I had to pay in New York or my friends pay in New Jersey.

76. Mild winters. The sweet smell of honeysuckle. Mockingbirds singing.
Katydids singing.

The purple grapelike-smelling blooms of kudzu in the late summer.

Our beaches.

Oh, lots of things.

79. It's pretty around here
and I like the way, most days, even when it's really hot, in the afternoons the clouds come in and cool things off before sunset. And the lightning. Love to watch the lightning.

Most days.

:hi:

81. I just went out in the yard and picked a bowl of blueberries to
go with the juicy local peaches I bought yesterday. We'll have sweet corn for dinner tonight that's sitting on the stalk right now.
