Mac question
Edited on Sat Jul-21-07 05:29 AM by mutley_r_us
I am house-sitting for my sister, and they have a Mac. My own computer is a PC. All I can manage to do on this computer is open the internets (and I'm lucky I can do that much :P ).

My main question is -- if I have a Word document on an external hard drive, how do I open it on the Mac? I'd like to send out my resume while I'm here, but, well, I can't. Of course, I understand that Word is a Microsoft program, but under which program on the Mac should I open it?

Help out a poor, misguided PC user!

:D

1. I'd click on the file, on the external hard drive,

and see what happens. If they have Word, or Office, it should open with no problems. If not, ClarisWorks or WordPerfect might open it or be convinced to open it. Macs are easy, and most things will be the same as you're used to once you're within the program. Instead of the control key used as a shortcut for copying and pasting, etc, it's the option key (the one with the squiggly propeller-looking thingy and the apple symbol).

Good luck!

2. I know they don't have Word or Office
They do have some sort of word processing software, I just don't know what it is. I'll give this a shot.

I hope I don't blow up the computer. :P

13. Well, I'd give you some advice

6. Pages or TextEdit can work with .doc files.
And they do make Office for the Mac. It might be on there. Be careful, you might mess up the formating in the translation. I wouldn't really trust it if you are sending out a resume.

But, Click on the Finder icon in the dock...

That will bring up a window like this.. Select Applications on the left.

Hope that helps..

8. That actually does help.
I'm so afraid of messing something up, that it's great to see exactly what I should do.

Thanks!

10. It is really hard to mess something up..
You could delete a important document.. But, it will ask for a password if you try to delete a important file that the computer needs to start. Just don't empty the trash or go into any folders called "System" or "Library" without knowing exactly what you are doing.

14. Oh, I don't even do that on my own computer.
So, it won't be a problem on this one. :D

9. You'll have to work on being condescending before you can use a Mac.
Says the Linux user. :D

12. It seems I don't have it in me right now.
I just sat here for five minutes trying to think of something condescending to say. I guess I'm not worthy of the Mac. :D

Us Mackies are down to earth folks!

The "snobs" just don't represent us, ignore them.

If fact, I don't know ONE Mac snob- they are all proletarians,
rebel rousers and misfits! He-he, remember- I'm one of them.

Hi Billy!

:hi: :-)

17. Did you try double-clicking on the file? Or
if you did and that did nothing, look for "AppleWorks" by doing Command-F, typing in AppleWorks, and if it shows up, double-click on it to run it, then with the Open command (Command O), locate your file and open it in AppleWorks. Most Macs today have some version of MacLinkPlus installed, which will convert the .doc file to AppleWorks. Then you can make any changes you need, and save the file using the Save As command (Command-Shift-S) which has a pop-up menu to choose the file format to save it in (including Text and several varieties of Word .doc files). Give it a different name from your original Word file, if you want to still keep that file for working on a PC.

18. Well, I haven't actually tried anything yet
as the external hard drive is still at my house. I have to pick it up on my way back from work. I just wanted a reference guide for when I actually sit down to do this. But your advice seems very helpful. Thanks!
