? for computer nerds regarding twain.dll |
|
Sigh.
I've been trying to get my Mustek scanner to work on another computer. I get a "fail to load" message at the point after "acquire" and then am told that the twain.dll file is missing from windows and needs to be moved there.
So I've done that. No luck.
Then I downloaded a driver for Mustek.
No luck.
Any thoughts?

1. Step 1: Get a large hammer. |
|
Step 2: Smash the mustek scanner until it couldn't scan a piece of dust.
Step 3: But an Epson brand scanner.
If you like mustek, ignore the above -- uninstall every Mustek and twain component, reboot, clean temp files and clean the registry (www.ccleaner.com), and then reinstall the drivers.
Take what I say as suggestions and that I cannot be held accountable if you try this. (you probably won't have any problems, but the makers of ccleaner say the same thing too. :D )

I wouldn't think there would be trouble, since mustek software wasn't installed on this computer previously. But I will try what you say. I need this scanner because of its larger bed size. Can't afford a new one.

3. It should have installed automatically when you installed drivers |
|
If I recall, Mustek is notorious for not putting everything into one package- go back to the download site and thoroughly check to make sure you got everything you need.
They can make installing a scanner a somewhat joyless task- triple check everything on their site.

4. For Win 2000 or XP a common problem with dll's in general is |
|
Windows File Protection (which protects numerous system files from modification) stores a copy of the original dll and will restore the original dll if it is deleted or modified. Although there may be a twain.dll in your C:\windows directory, it is likely to be the incorrect one for your scanner. You need to remove the cached dll along with the original generic windows twain.dll.
1. Go to C:\windows\system32\dllcache, make a copy of twain.dll and twain32.dll and put someplace you can find it to restore if necessary, then delete twain.dll and twain32.dll from C:\windows\system32\dllcache .
2. Go to C:\windows and delete twian.dll and twain32.dll, it which point you'll get a message about deleting a protected file and asking you to insert the windows installation CD, click cancel, you'll get an system message asking if you want to keep the "unregistered version" , click yes.
3. Install or reinstall the scanner software in the directed manner for your scanner. On some scanners this may involve two installs, the scanner driver and whatever program manipulates your scanned images (Ulead, etc) - depends, just do whatever you did to install on the PC it works on.
