Why are people lauding Tammy Faye?
Is it tragic she died of cancer? Yes.
No one disagrees with that.

But she was a CROOK!
During the time she was helping Jim Bakker fleece their flock, she had her home decorated in obscene luxury, including gold-plated bathroom fixtures.

Not only that, she had a doghouse built for her dogs, that was AIR-CONDITIONED.

And don't tell me she didn't know about Jim's corruption and sexual perversions.
She would have had to be a total moron to not know.

1. Do you believe in redemption?
Do you believe that people can change? That they can regret their past and do all they can to change it?

I do.

3. Yes, they can.
AFTER paying back any and all the money stolen.

Tammy Faye never even TRIED to pay back those screwed by her and Jim.

7. To be honest...
on this topic, I just can't understand why some DUers go out of their way to make other DUers, who are saddened by her death, feel like shit about it.

There are a million threads on this topic in GD. If you really want to know why people are mourning her death, go read some of them.

2. Apparently she redeemed herself
Frankly, I don't give enough of a fuck to look it up, but you should be able to find links as to why she's beyond your opinion of her in GD.

6. She was never charged with a crime.
What were her husband's "sexual perversions," by the way? As far as I know, he had an affair with a secretary in his church and paid her hush money to not make the affair public. That likely was a violation of his marriage vows, but hardly perverse.

Also, I've heard that the bathroom fixtures were brass and that the doghouse was heated with an old heater to keep the dogs warm and not air conditioned.

9. We had a heated doghouse when I was a kid.
My dad was always taking in strays, so he converted a metal "out building" into a heated doghouse for them. Dad built it with his own money, but it was hardly an extravagance.

Nice to see you, Maddy.

10. Mine are here in the cabin with me.
When I went on vacation a couple of weeks ago, I left the AC on so that the cat would be comfortable while we were gone. (Dogs went with us, but, after much deliberation about whether we should board the cat, take the cat, or leave the cat with my parents to check in on him every day, we decided on the latter. So, instead of cutting off the AC while we were gone, I set in on 75, so that he'd be comfortable. Crazy, huh. :D )

11. Anyone who would call you crazy
for attending to your cat's and dogs' comfort and health is just being judgmental and mean-spirited. Just my opinion. I'd do the same for Ginger, (if we had air conditioning, anyway. x( )

Unfortunately, since they live with us and have NO thumbs, we control the temperature!

35. Completely off-topic, but today I saw a kitten with "thumbs"!
I can't remember the scientific name for it, but this little fellow had extra toes, and the extra ones were off to the side, much like opposable thumbs. He was using them to grip in the same way we would.

He was available for adoption, but it's just too soon after getting Frankie (our dog) to introduce yet another pet (we have one dog and one cat at this point).

Perhaps seeing that excellent film may give a new perspective to some of the people here who disparaged her...even in death.

A sad weekend for me. She was a wonderful person.

13. I think their lauding Tammy Faye because, honestly...
...they're all happy that the price of cosmetics will come down drastically now that the demand has been alleviated by at least 20%. I agree with you to a certain extent- I remember what she and her husband did, and I also remember her bagging on him when he went to prison and immediately hooked up with someone else. I also remember a tear-filled Tammy Faye, just before her husband went to jail, say into a CNN camera, "I'm having to live on 15K a month now, and that's just harsh. Really, really harsh."

16. I don't feel strongly either way.
Since I don't know enough about her life to laud her, and I refuse to disparage the recently dead, especially someone who suffered as much as she did.
The fact that people are pissing all over her, however, sickens me. How would they feel if someone did that to one of their loved ones that had just died after a long, terrible illness?

18. That's what got me last night.
People deliberately going out of their way to piss on people's sadness about Tammy Faye's passing. And when I say going out of their way, I'm talking about going into different threads and different forums. Aggressively doing so. It wasn't some "I don't want to be in lockstep" thing. It was deliberate, aggressive posts that...well, pissed over the heartfelt sadness some of us feel.

17. first of all, let he who is without sin......etc
Secondly, if you knew your facts, it was her husband Jim (who paid for his crime in jail) who stole the money. She was as blindsided by it all as anyone, and more of an "innocent bistander" (collateral damage as they say) rather than a criminal. Shame on you.

21. i find it unfortunate that Tammy's time with the PTL
is remembered for the scandal and not the good she did.

she didn't wait yrs to redeem herself. unlike other TV preachers of her time, Tammy spoke of acceptance and understanding of the Gay community, all while she was with the PTL. needless to say, it didn't sit well with the haters.

19. YOU INHUMAN BEAST
seriously, i don't know.

it's merely a fact that someone dies. everyone dies. its sadness is directly proportional to how close that person is to me.

the grief ninnies come out in droves, the grave pissers come out in droves and everyone jumps all over each other trying to be more morally pious in their grief or more vile in their grave pissing than anyone else.

it's rather amusing and this is all i will say about this matter.

thus spake datasuspect.

27. Why do you give a shit enough to ask? Many people think...
she redeemed herself quite well after the scandals and that is more than enough reason to mourn this dead.

She's dead now, and whatever happens after death happened to her. Without our assistance.

29. She did a lot of bad things, but ultimately redeemed herself.
No one that followed her story could say that she continued to swindle anyone or that she didn't regret her participation in Jim Bakker's/ Jerry Falwell's empire.

We can remember her for both the bad things and the good things. Although she used to be a fundie, she ultimately embraced people that the fundies rejected.

Others, upon our passing, could probably say the same about any of us.

People change, they repent, they try to repair mistakes made as best they can. As someone else here said, it's a matter of compassion.

34. Do our fallen in Iraq and Afghanistan get the same worship in death?
Can some one who celebrates the death of these celebrates answer that for once?

There are no threads proclaiming the deaths of the fallen military. Matters not that they are in a war they cannot stop. Matters not they are lead by a Monster in Chief. When one dies, they are still our Sons and Daughters, Mothers and Fathers, Sisters and Brothers, and their lives were worth more than one "repentant" criminal who is lauded here.

In spite of the pleading of his family and friends, last Tuesday, Richie Bond, son of a co-worker, left for basic training in the National Guard, not to go to war, but to help HERE when he was needed. He is POSITIVE the war will be over before he will ever be called up. Ah the confidence of youth.

He is a hero, and so are the thousands killed, the tens of thousands wounded, the tens of thousands scarred and families broken by this illegal war.

Yet, DU goes to battle over a "reformed" thief.

Makes me sadder every second I think about it.

A willing one, but still kind of an airhead who could not believe her good fortune. Limos, big houses, dog sitters, people worshiping at her feet, etc.

I used to watch their show, kind of like seeing the sideshow of freaks in a circus. Fascinated that people would buy into their bullshit.
