Which of the 21 James Bond movies is your absolute favorite?
And if the new "Casino Royale" is your fave, what is your second fave?

I'll say mine later.

Oh, did you know Daniel Craig is on record saying Timothy Dalton was an excellent choice for Bond?

1. I could never get into those movies...
Do people watch them because they're ridiculous? Maybe I should take another look.

2. Here are the non-ridiculous movies:
In reverse-chronological order:

Casino Royale (2006 - all in all, the franchise trying to redeem itself after its worst decade (1990s) ended and is by all means a ravishing success)
Licence to Kill (1989 - feels almost like "Miami Vice" but is laudable)
The Living Daylights (1987 - hasn't dated well as it supports what became the Taliban)
For Your Eyes Only (1981 - the pre-credits bit is a revenge scene with a stupid comedic moment, but get beyond that and it's a solid thriller)
The Spy Who Loved Me (1977 - venerable despite some superficial silly names like "Agent XXX")
On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969 - a terrific guest cast and sublime direction make George Lazenby's outing worth a watch)
From Russia With love (1963 - the mold of which all serious Bond movies borrow from. Fortunately!)
Dr. No (1962 - this one started the theatrical series.)

These are why I love Bond. Especially the top four (and bottom three) in the list. They aren't based on silliness, Bond is more of a politically correct anti-hero just as he is in Ian Fleming's novels.

3. God, you just reminded me of something hilarious.
When I was very young (early to mid sixties), I used to go to the neighbors' house to visit my two friends. When their parents were gone, we put on the dad's James Bond records and jumped on the furniture! Such brats we were. We did this more than once, and we eventually got caught.

The music must have come from Dr. No and From Russia With Love.

Anyway, I'll check 'em out--especially the earliest two. Thanks!

6. absolutely. that was my first Bond movie, actually.
You Only Live Twice is my second favorite. and I LOVE the music from both of these. I have read all of the Fleming Bond books, which I started after I saw Goldfinger. I think I have read them all twice at least.

9. The new "Casion Royale" is my favorite "Dr No" is my second
I love origin stories and to be honest I'm really only a 'passing fan' of Bond movies. I usually like them when I catch them on TV but I've never paid to see one in a theater (except for the new "Casino Royal" or made a special point of renting or watching one on TV.

10. Goldfinger
I'm rewatching the Bond Films on the new DVD's. Right now, (after Casino Royale) I'd say Goldfinger, followed by Doctor No.

Since I'd never seen On Her Majesty's Secret Service, I watched that one first. Lazenby was a bit stiff, but overall it was good. The hard part was watching Diana Rigg play a girlie-girl after Emma Peel in the Avengers.

As I mentioned in an earlier Bond thread, I look at the different Bonds as apples and oranges - Connery/Craig and Moore/ Brosnan. Then a side order of Lazenby/Dalton. They all are entertaining, even the more ridiculous ones.

11. Goldeneye
For a few reasons, Pierce was badass in it, it erased the shitty memory of Timothy Dalton and it had a KICKASS game on N64.

14. I guess I'll be a lone advocate (other than Daniel Craig) for Timothy Dalton.
I thought he was a terrific Bond. Especially after the ridiculous Bond films of Roger Moore. Dalton was both good-looking and cruel-looking, as described by Fleming. The plots of his films were at least mostly credible, and his Bond had some real depth. I regret that he filmed only two Bonds, but maybe it's for the best. Who knows if they would have spun out of control like the Moore and Brosnan Bonds?

I say Dalton nailed it.

15. Make me another one who likes to nail Dalton's performance as the best too.
:D

Wasn't there a website devoted to the lowdown on the 3rd Dalton movie, if it was to be made?

http://www.mi6.co.uk/sections/articles/bond_17_act1.php3

Would be the one...

18. The 3rd Dalton movie was going to be "Property Of A Lady"
And I seem to remember reading it would involve futuristic robots and lasers and things like that, and would take place in Japan.

I would've loved to see such a movie, but I wonder if it would've been too ridiculous and Moonraker-ish for me to stomach.

17. On Her Majesty's Secret Service - and Daniel Craig was right.
IMHO, Dalton made an excellent James Bond, similar to the book portrayal (I have also read all the novels).

I wonder what would've happened had Lazenby stayed on. He wasn't a bad Bond, he just wasn't Sean Connery, and that was the only yardstick available for measuring Bond actors.

From Russia With Love is a very close second-favorite. Casino Royale is probably third.

the others.
