Interactive toys are always good. Maybe a speak and say with the sounds of animals?

3. How adorable.
Have you thought about starting a college fund for him? Maybe get some other relatives to join in. If he's got a large extended family he might end up being overwhelmed with gifts.

5. I suggest a play date with you
Make a cute homemade gift card for a play date.

Then on the appointed day, bake a cake or cookies together, take him to the zoo, let him finger paint on the porch etc.

Added bonus, it's a super gift for the parents too!

6. Seconded
He's going to wind up with noisy plastic things up to his eyeballs. Taking him someplace cool (and taking lots of pictures!) is a much better idea than giving him a toy. And, as Dirty Hippie said, an afternoon off is a present for his parents too.

10. Aw. :(
How about paying to get portraits done? Right around his first birthday's a good time for them, and since you're far away at least you'll get new pictures out of it.

25. A xylophone.
Kids love banging on things to make noise.

He's a bit young for boxes, but once he's three or four, you can make the whole world out of a big box or two.
If you can get a washing machine or refrigerator sized one you get extra points.
