My Moggy is on I.V.s now...
My big, black old man kitty was diagnosed with kidney failure pending the blood tests on what actually is going on and he needs us to give him an IV of ringer's lactate every other day to keep going. Poor old baby has had thyroid issues for the past three years and has lost 4 lbs since then - it seems to be catching up. He tested negative for diabetes, but he's always been susceptible to crystals in the urine, so his kidneys could be damaged in other ways.

It's difficult giving him the drip, it takes about 15 minutes, he doesn't like it - and I'm not used to doing it and feel bad about "hurting" him, especially since he's such a loving baby. But it seems to be helping him afterwards, he's not drooling and drinking so much. The vet said that if it's just thyroid, he'll need the IVs for the rest of his life, but he could live another three years or so. It could be worse, and he might only have a week or so.

1. It must be so agonizing for you
I hope things settle down and he responds well to the IVs and also that you will have many more years with him. He sounds like a sweetheart.

2. What were his symptoms before this
We've got a 17 yr old female who's been drinking and peeing up a storm for the past year. I've had her checked twice for diabetes and thyroid issues but she's come back negative every time.

3. Foamy drool at the mouth and urine smell in the breath.
His pee was also a dark yellow instead of clear pale yellow. He was constantly hiding or looking for cool, dark places and acting lethargic. Dehydration look to the fur (dry and brittle feeling), even though his gums were still pink and his skin "popped back" when pinched. This developed over a week with the drool and the lethargy being most noticeable.
First, we thought it might be the flea treatment (Advantix) or his allergy to fleas kicking in, but the kidlet remembered she noticed the foaming the day before we gave him the treatment. We took him in Friday, three days after he started showing the symptoms.
I'm sad to say, the wait had a lot to do with the fact I didn't get paid until Friday. :(

He took half his IV today, brave baby, before he got too upset at the weird feeling and had to take off. We'll give him the other half later on tonight.
